She Walked Away With His Twins While He Begged the Ground She Walked On novel Chapter 216

"How could you stay away for three years? Leaving the mother and aunt to raise the kids all by themselves. It's too hard on them."

Quinn was so embarrassed she wanted the floor to swallow her whole, all the color draining from her face.

"No, it's not like that..."

Hearing Martha's scolding, Quinn's stomach twisted. She scrambled to change the subject, hating to see Ethan dragged through the mud on her behalf.

He was just doing her a huge favor. This was only his first day playing the part, and he was already being lectured by a nosy neighbor.

The guilt was eating her alive.

She had braced herself for him to get annoyed, but Ethan didn't even flinch. Without a hint of displeasure, he humbly accepted Martha's interrogation and advice.

"It was entirely my fault. I was stationed overseas for three years. I just got my transfer approved so I could finally reunite with my family. I hope we can count on you as a neighbor going forward."

Seeing his impeccable manners, Martha's eyes shone with approval. She couldn't find a single thing left to criticize.

Secretly, she figured this was why Quinn had waited so faithfully.

Her husband was incredibly handsome, flawlessly polite, and had a great corporate job.

If it were her daughter, she'd have told her to wait for a catch like this too.

*Ding.* The elevator doors slid open.

Quinn stepped out first with Caleb in her arms. Ethan offered Martha a polite nod. "Have a good evening, ma'am. We're heading in."

He carried Luna and followed Quinn out, while Martha waved enthusiastically.

"See you around, Luna's dad!"

...

Quinn unlocked the front door. Hearing the commotion, Yara Chase had almost opened her bedroom door to greet them, but catching sight of Ethan stepping inside, she instantly retracted her foot and ducked back into her room.

A knowing gleam flashed in Yara's eyes. These two adults and two kids truly looked like a picture-perfect family.

"Ethan, you can lay Luna on the bed."

"Alright."

Ethan gently placed Luna onto the mattress and pulled the covers over her.

Stepping back out, he casually glanced around the apartment. Two bedrooms, one living room. It was painfully simple, barely livable.

But with two kids and two adults, it was incredibly cramped.

Quinn poured him a glass of water and handed it over apologetically.
