Seeing them arrive, the smile on Miles York's face vanished.

His tone was laced with surprise. "Mom, why... are you here?"

Judith York's brows pulled into a tight knot. "If I didn't show up, I wouldn't have known you were taking in a goddaughter."

Yara Chase scooped Luna into her arms, while Quinn Avery held the little girl's hand, worried she would be frightened.

Dressed in an elegant silk jacket, Judith looked incredibly formidable. Her cold, arrogant gaze swept over Quinn and Yara before locking onto Luna.

Her eyes flickered slightly. Why did this little girl's eyes look so much like Quinn's?

"Miles, you're taking someone else's kid as a goddaughter? Why didn't you tell Judith about such a massive decision?"

"Even Leo and I had no idea," Jade Winter added, her voice dripping with grievance and a subtle accusation. It sounded as though she and Leo meant less to him than a stranger's brat.

Macy York was far more direct and vicious. She pointed an angry finger at Quinn.

"Miles, did this woman put you up to this? I knew she wasn't over you."

"Macy, this has nothing to do with her."

Miles hated that his mother was ruining the mood. Luna had been on the verge of agreeing, but their sudden appearance had derailed everything.

"Mom, I'll explain this to you later. Go inside and rest for a bit."

"Jack, take them inside."

"I don't need to rest. If there's something to discuss, say it to my face."

Judith's gaze was dark and oppressive. "Quinn, is this your friend's daughter? Why is Miles making her his goddaughter?"

Meeting her accusing glare head-on, Quinn didn't flinch. Her voice was cold and clear.

"You'll have to ask your son. Yara and I never agreed to this. He's the one insisting. Since you're here, why don't you talk some sense into him?"

Faced with Judith's interference, Quinn felt zero anger. In fact, she felt a profound sense of relief.
