She Walked Away With His Twins While He Begged the Ground She Walked On novel Chapter 229

Hearing this, a dark flicker crossed Miles York's eyes, as if he wanted to explain something.

"Leo... he..."

"Miles..."

Jade Winter cut him off in a panic. A trace of desperate pleading flashed in her eyes, terrified of what he might reveal.

Putting on her best performance of a gentle, understanding woman, she pleaded softly.

"Judith just wants to know why you're doing this. Did Quinn beg you? I know the child doesn't have a father and lacks a male figure in her life, but you can't just keep Judith in the dark and..."

Judith York's face twisted in shock, her shrill voice piercing the room.

"What? She's a fatherless, illegitimate child?"

No wonder they wanted him to be the godfather.

With a background like that, they thought they could tie themselves to the York family?

Contempt and fury flared in her eyes. Quinn Avery was just a nanny's daughter; it figured her friends were women with messy, chaotic lives.

"Miles, how could you be so foolish?"

"Mom, Luna is not illegitimate. She has a father, and he just returned from abroad."

As Miles said this, his eyes—dark and still as a midnight river—shifted to Jade.

"Jade, before you know the facts, don't spread rumors about Luna's background. It just breeds nasty gossip."

A flash of embarrassment crossed Jade's face, her fingernails digging into her palms. Rage boiled inside her.

He was actually scolding her over a wild child?

Miles turned his attention back to his mother, his tone patient. "This has nothing to do with Quinn. I simply adore Luna. That little girl cures my exhaustion."

Miles's eyes darkened, his irritation flaring. "Mom, Leo is a boy. He's a bit rough around the edges. I want a daughter."

His affection for Leo didn't even come close to the intense bond he felt with Luna.

He didn't understand it himself. He only knew that some mysterious force compelled him to protect her and treat her well.

Since he couldn't explain it, he worried that the more he said, the more his mother would blame Quinn.

If she stormed out to berate Quinn, the conflict would explode, and the adoption ceremony would be ruined.

Leo could be his son, and Luna could be his goddaughter. Wasn't that the perfect arrangement?

Judith genuinely believed Quinn had cast some sort of hex on her son. To adopt a completely unrelated child just for her sake?

It was sheer lunacy!

"If you want a daughter, have one of your own! You don't need to adopt someone else's kid—especially not the daughter of Quinn's friend."
