Seeing her brother's true, greedy nature exposed, a bone-deep chill settled over Quinn.
"AJ, your greed is revolting. This is purely a contract marriage. The agreement was that he would pay Dad's gambling debts and cover Mom's nursing home bills. Nothing else."
AJ was furious. Seeing his sister lecture him like this made him seethe with frustration over her supposed stupidity.
Suddenly, a thought struck him, and his eyes narrowed calculatingly. "Quinn, don't tell me you're still hoping he'll change his mind and fall for you?"
"You've been by his side for four years and haven't managed to melt his icy heart. Give it up."
"He only showed up at The Aurora Club to save you because your contract marriage isn't over yet, and he couldn't risk you dragging the York name through the mud. Stop being delusional and thinking he actually cares about you."
The only reason AJ had called his sister to save him was because he knew how fiercely Miles protected the York family's reputation. He had gambled that Miles wouldn't let his wife or her brother be destroyed publicly.
Hearing this, a furious fire ignited in Quinn's eyes.
"AJ, is that exactly why you thought you could use me? Because you assumed Miles would always clean up your messes?"
AJ avoided her gaze, refusing to answer the question.
"I heard his childhood sweetheart came back from abroad, and he's looking to end your contract early. He doesn't have an ounce of affection for you. Why are you being so stupid? Why aren't you securing a nest egg for yourself?"
"You wasted four years on him. Consider this money compensation for your lost youth. Just give the money to me..."
Quinn's phone rang sharply, slicing through AJ's pathetic rationalizations.
Seeing it was Director Vance calling, Quinn's stomach dropped. Director Vance never called her directly; he always sent emails or text messages.
She hurriedly answered, "Director Vance..."
"Ms. Avery, are you absolutely certain the translation you submitted was done entirely by you? Another publisher submitted the exact same manuscript for the same book a day before we did. The text is identical word-for-word. I need to know right now—who plagiarized whom?"
