Hunter pushed up his glasses, his gaze darkening slightly. What did his document delivery have to do with anything?
It was painfully obvious the boss's mood plummeted after his phone call with Mrs. York, but there was no reason to tell Jade that.
"Secretary Winter, I doubt it's about the documents. Mr. York is likely just stressed about you and Mrs. York competing against each other for the National Prize for Literary Translation."
Jade's face instantly dropped. Why the hell was this getting brought up again out of nowhere?
Catching the underlying meaning in Hunter's words, she stiffened her neck. "Hunter, I know you and Quinn are quite close. Why don't you go advise her? If she doesn't have the qualifications, she shouldn't force it. In the end, she's only going to embarrass herself and put Miles in a difficult position."
That bitch. She thought Quinn had finally given up after being quiet for the last two days, but she was still kicking up a fuss.
Hunter adjusted his glasses, a tight, polite smile pulling at his lips. "Secretary Winter, I'm merely an assistant. I have no right to interfere in Mrs. York's affairs. As a secretary yourself, it's best to stay in your lane and focus on your own duties."
Jade's face flushed hot. How could she not tell that Hunter was subtly insulting her for overstepping her bounds?
Before she could say another word, Hunter collected the documents his boss had signed, shoved them into his briefcase, offered a stiff nod, and walked off.
Jade stared daggers into his back, withdrawing her gaze with a cold, venomous glint.
Hunter planned to say a quick goodbye to the boss before heading back to the office.
Miles's expression was grim. "I don't want to hear about Quinn harassing Wayne ever again."
Hunter let out a quiet sigh. "Understood, Mr. York. I know what to do."
...
Quinn was still desperately trying to call and text Wayne, but there was no response.
Suddenly, a notification popped up on her phone. It was a message from Wayne.
[Ms. Avery, I'm so sorry! Please forgive me, but I can't help you. Everyone in the corporation knows Secretary Winter is Mr. York's childhood sweetheart and the apple of his eye. I can't afford to cross her. Losing my job is a small matter, but my aunt's trading company cannot afford to offend a powerful man like Mr. York. My aunt funded both mine and my brother's college tuitions. I cannot let her get dragged down into this. I'm sorry! I'm truly sorry. Please don't contact me again.]
Less than two minutes after the message arrived, it was unsent.
