Her lips were swollen because that domineering man, Miles, had aggressively kissed her in the car. How on earth was she supposed to explain that?
Caleb put down his book and walked over to inspect.
"Mommy, did you get bitten by a toxic mosquito? I read about symptoms like this in a book."
Quinn had been panicking over how to answer her daughter, but her son's innocent suggestion handed her the perfect excuse.
She hastily nodded, claiming a massive black mosquito must have bitten her outside the apartment complex.
Ethan's gaze lingered on her plush, swollen lips. The lenses of his glasses failed to conceal the sudden, violent surge of dark emotion in his eyes.
His usually relaxed brow furrowed deeply, and his long fingers unconsciously curled into tight fists.
One look was all it took for him to guess exactly what had happened. His chest tightened with a suffocating weight.
He lowered his eyes, masking the storm of complex emotions, and forced his expression to remain calm and gentle.
But behind his glasses, his heavy gaze remained fixed on her slightly swollen lips, radiating a suppressed, helpless frustration.
...
Early the next morning, Miles walked downstairs for breakfast. Jade was waiting in the foyer.
Jack greeted him. "Good morning, sir. Ms. Winter arrived very early. I was just about to head upstairs to let you know, but she insisted on waiting down here so as not to disturb you."
Jade looked pale and frail, her eyes bloodshot. It was obvious she had tossed and turned all night.
When she spoke, her voice dripped with vulnerability. "Miles... I called you last night, but you didn't answer."
She had tried desperately to contact Wayne West last night, only to be told by Lynn Reed that he had been fired immediately. Hunter had coldly informed her that not pursuing criminal charges against Wayne was already an act of immense mercy.
Miles raised his hand, adjusting his luxury watch. His tone betrayed no emotion. "I got back late and didn't check my phone."
Noticing the lack of warmth in his eyes, Jade clutched the hem of her shirt, her anxiety spiraling into panic.
"Miles, about yesterday... I can explain."
Her voice was thick and raspy, accompanied by a soft cough, as she desperately tried to launch into her defense.
