Miles York ended the call, a heavy expression settling over his features.
He had just been about to greet Mr. Pierce, but his footsteps ground to a halt.
"Quinn, Jade saved Macy from a falling billboard and got seriously hurt. I have to go to the hospital right now."
Quinn Avery was slightly taken aback. He never bothered to explain his whereabouts to her. Why the sudden transparency today?
But it was just a flicker of surprise. She offered no response.
Seeing her silence, Miles turned, briefly greeted Mr. Pierce, and strode away.
"Mommy, who got hurt?"
"That weird uncle seemed really worried about her."
"Someone we don't know well."
"Oh."
Quinn's phone rang. It was Ethan Leigh. "Quinn, I'm back from my business trip. I'm driving over to pick you all up."
Quinn smiled. "Luna, Daddy's here to pick us up."
Luna leaned in close to the phone, her sweet, childish voice melting through the speaker. "Daddy, you're back!"
"Yeah, Daddy's waiting for you outside the estate."
As Miles climbed into his black Bentley, he caught sight of a familiar figure standing by a car, talking on the phone. The man’s expression was gentle, completely oblivious to his surroundings.
It was Ethan Leigh. What was he doing here?
Miles had never seen that look on Ethan's face before. He seemed so genuinely happy—was he on the phone with a girlfriend?
But there was no time to ask questions. Miles urgently directed the driver to the hospital.
...
St. Jude's Medical Center.
Jade Winter lay on her side in the hospital bed, nursing severe bruising on her shoulder and back. The doctor had given her a few stitches, and she was terrified of scarring.

I would have accepted the jerk husband ending up with the heroine if he’s only powerful, intelligent but he’s so powerless and so stupid....
Can you make Ethan be the endgame? That Miles is a total jerk....
