"Quinn, I need to tell you something."
Quinn and Ethan waved goodbye to the kids. Seeing the look on his face, she realized whatever he was about to say was serious.
What could possibly make Ethan's usually calm, warm expression shift like that?
Quinn asked with concern, "Ethan, what's going on? We're friends, is there something I can help you with?"
Ethan adjusted his glasses, his voice low and soft. "Quinn, there's... something I haven't told you. I'm also attending Grandma Evelyn's birthday gala."
"If the kids see me and call me Daddy, won't your contract husband get the wrong idea?"
Quinn smacked her forehead. She hadn't expected Ethan to be at the York family gala.
But thinking about it, it made sense. His company probably sent him to interface with York Corporation and offer birthday wishes. It was standard corporate networking.
"Ethan, I'm so glad you brought this up. When I get home, I'll tell the kids that when they see you at the gala, they need to call you 'Uncle Ethan.' We shouldn't act as close as we usually do, either, just so no one gets the wrong idea."
After all, Ethan was just doing her a massive favor. If people out in high society got the impression he was married with kids, it would ruin his reputation with anyone trying to set him up or arrange a marriage.
She absolutely could not drag Ethan's reputation through the mud. "Ethan, this was my oversight. I'll talk to the kids. When we see you at the party, we'll keep a polite distance."
Ethan wanted to tell her about his relationship with Miles, but he was terrified she would blame him. Knowing how fiercely she hid her children, what if she started suspecting him, keeping her guard up, and pushing him away?
"Quinn, if you ever found out... that I hid something from you, would you be angry?"
Ethan's voice dropped incredibly low, carrying a faint, almost imperceptible trace of anxiety.
Quinn took a sip of her juice, her tone relaxed. "Hid something? Ethan, you've helped me so much, and I know you'd never hurt me. You don't owe me an explanation for everything you do. We're partners."
Hearing that answer, a bitter ache spread through Ethan's chest. After all this time, were they still just 'partners'?
Noticing his mood drop, Quinn realized she might have spoken too coldly. That sounded far too transactional. "Ethan, even though we have a partnership, we're also true friends. You and Yara are the best friends I have in this life."

I would have accepted the jerk husband ending up with the heroine if he’s only powerful, intelligent but he’s so powerless and so stupid....
Can you make Ethan be the endgame? That Miles is a total jerk....
