Loyce's face remained impassive as she considered it for a few seconds. Then, without hesitation, she deleted the resume. She had no intention of hiring someone with such a tarnished reputation.
By evening, she had finalized the list of selected candidates and sent it to the pharmacist at Blossom Drugstore, asking them to announce the results. Those who made it to the second round would be notified of their interview time at the hospital.
A moment later, the pharmacist called her. "Walsh Hospital is officially ours now; the paperwork is complete. Can we change the name yet?"
"You can," Loyce said, "but the new signage is still being made, so it won't be ready for a while. For now, just send out the emails under the Blossom Drugstore name."
"Got it."
Loyce finished up and left for Lucian's house, timing her arrival for when Cyrilla would be home from school.
...
Meanwhile, notifications of success or failure had been sent to every applicant. Sapphire, of course, received a rejection email. Unfortunately, she had been so busy re-establishing her old social connections, hopping from one dinner party to another, that she hadn't had a moment to check her inbox.
At a dinner table, a wealthy heir, well aware of the Walsh family's downfall, sneered at her. "I remember when I used to call you every day, Ms. Walsh. My mother even begged you to take a look at my chronic condition, but you wouldn't give us the time of day. And now, you're the one inviting me to dinner, wanting to be friends. I must say, I'm shocked."
Another girl chimed in with a giggle, "Times have changed! Sapphire's family hit a rough patch, so she has to lower herself to hang out with us. You should be more understanding."
Sapphire knew they were mocking her, but to re-establish herself in Metropia and revive the Walsh family, she had to endure the humiliation. Forcing a smile, she said, "I was immature back then. From now on, if any of you have problems, you can come find me at Walsh Hospital. I'll take care of any difficult cases."
The heir looked surprised. "Walsh Hospital? Wasn't it shut down?"
Sapphire smiled coolly. "Thanks to Lucian, I was able to buy it back."
She let them believe that Gavin's call to Lucian had been the deciding factor, conveniently omitting Gavin's actual contribution and the humiliating price she had truly paid to get the hospital. She had no desire for outsiders to know the truth.
To the group of heirs at the table, the fact that Sapphire could still call on Lucian for help implied their relationship was strong. And Lucian, the scion of Metropia's most powerful military family, had political connections they, as mere business families, couldn't hope to match. Instantly, the mocking tones vanished, replaced by polite deference as they raised their glasses to her.
"Well, in that case, congratulations, Sapphire, on getting Walsh Hospital back and becoming the new head of the Walsh family."
"We'll be sure to send flowers for the grand reopening."
Back at the Sampson family, Loyce had gone three days without sleep during busy periods. She looked terrible then, but it never bothered her. This was nothing.
But Cyrilla insisted. "Actually, I haven't finished today's homework yet. How about I finish it first, and then you can check it for me?"
Loyce could tell the high schooler had no real intention of being tutored. Not wanting to force the issue, she simply yawned. "Alright. You work, I'll check it when you're done."
"Okay!" Cyrilla nodded. She sat obediently at her desk, pretending to work.
As time ticked by, she made sure to be as quiet as possible. Peeking over, she saw Loyce leaning on the desk, her head resting in her palm, her eyes closed. She seemed to be asleep.
Cyrilla smiled. This was exactly what she wanted: for this woman to come over, do nothing, and preferably sleep through the whole session. It would make it much easier to show Lucian what a horrible person she really was.
A little while later, her plan in motion, Cyrilla secretly texted her mother.
[Mom, my tutor didn't eat dinner before she came. When the session is almost over, could you bring up two plates of food for us as a late-night snack?]
