Lucian leaned against the car window, watching the long line of buses in the rearview mirror as he pushed the cigarette pack away. "I'm out here to unwind. No smoking."
"The conflict at the oil field never broke out, just a show of force. It was a false alarm, so we all deserve a break," Harvey said, putting his own cigarettes away. He then offered Lucian a creamy candy. "My daughter always stuffs these in my pocket. They're pretty good. You should try one."
It was a piece of taffy with a cute wrapper. Lucian didn't refuse, unwrapping it and popping it into his mouth. "Why does she like to give you candy?" he asked casually.
Thinking of his adorable daughter, Harvey chuckled. "Because she loves me."
Lucian's eyebrows lifted slightly as he glanced at him. "Love?"
"Yeah. She always says she gives me her favorite candy because she loves me." Harvey's eyes shone whenever he talked about his daughter. "She's the apple of my eye."
Lucian suddenly recalled how Loyce would also give him candy from time to time. A small smile touched his lips, his mood brightening. "Yes," he murmured. "They certainly are a treasure."
Soon, all the school buses had arrived and were ready to depart, buzzing with the excited chatter of students.
"Did you hear?! *He's* actually here for our school's winter camp! He's in the lead vehicle!"
"Our school has this winter camp every year before the college entrance exams, and we've partnered with the military a few times, but we've never had someone of his rank show up! What's going on today?"
"What else could it be? Last time at the assembly hall, he personally carried Cyrilla off after she fell from the stage. He's obviously here for her!"
The students' gossip made its way to the Ace Class bus. Through the open window, the elite students looked outside. Loyce glanced over as well, just in time to see Cyrilla running toward the lead car and handing a box of pastries inside.
With all eyes on her, Cyrilla savored the envious gazes. She passed the box to Lucian. "My mom made these early this morning. She insisted I give you a box to have on the road."
The Ace Class students were disgusted. They detested academic dishonesty and fraud, viewing Cyrilla as a lost cause.
Their gazes shifted to Loyce, who was sitting in the front row. In terms of both elegance and intelligence, it was a total knockout. If Lucian wasn't blind, he'd know who the obvious choice was.
Meanwhile, in the lead vehicle, Lucian closed the window and handed the box to Robert in the back seat. "This is for you."
Robert cheerfully opened it, only to hesitate when he saw the ridiculously cute pastries. "This is obviously from Cyrilla. It's all little teddy bear cookies and heart shapes."
Suddenly, the adorable bears lost their appeal. It felt awkward, like he was about to consume a young girl's affection.
"Then share them with the men. Don't let them go to waste," Lucian said flatly. "Since everyone's here, let's get moving."
