The bedroom door clicked shut.
Sigrid stood rooted to the spot, trembling uncontrollably. She could hear Ruby's muffled, teasing voice from down the hall. "You're so bad... did you really want her to watch?"
Followed by Nathan's dark chuckle.
Sigrid's legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.
She remembered all the years Nathan had spent groveling at her feet.
She remembered the way he smiled through the pain when she treated him like dirt.
She remembered telling him he wasn't even fit to tie Lucian's shoes, and the flash of agony in his eyes.
She thought it was love. She thought it meant he would take whatever abuse she handed out, as long as she let him stay near her.
Now she realized the horrifying truth.
It wasn't love. He had been swallowing her abuse, storing every insult, every humiliation, just waiting for the day he could force it all down her throat.
Sigrid curled into a ball on the floor, shaking violently.
She finally understood what it meant to reap what you sow.
Lucian was utterly ruthless.
Hours later, the noises from the bedroom finally ceased. Nathan emerged in a silk robe. Seeing Sigrid still huddled on the floor, his eyes held nothing but icy contempt.
"Do you finally understand what I went through?" he asked, grabbing her chin and forcing her to look at him. "If you had truly loved me, even for a second, I never would have agreed to help Lucian."
Knowing the situation was beyond repair, Sigrid sneered. "You think you're so powerful now? You just traded one master for another. You're nothing but Lucian's lapdog."
"I will always be better than you," she spat defiantly. "Lucian outplayed me, and I can admit that. But you? You're just riding his coattails. He's the one really controlling the board, isn't he? You're just a figurehead."
Nathan chuckled, patting her cheek condescendingly. "Save your breath. You can't drive a wedge between us. Unlike you, I know exactly what Lucian and Loyce are capable of. And I know that what he promised me is mine. We are allies."
"Oh, by the way," Nathan added casually before turning to leave. "Do you know why Lucian was willing to risk a lethal surgery to remove that implant?"
Sigrid glared at him.
