"He has terminal lung cancer," Loyce explained. "His medical team has given up. They sent me his charts hoping I could perform a miracle."
Lucian remained silent, finding the situation deeply ironic. "Do you want to save him?"
"I can't," she replied bluntly. "Even if I wanted to, the cancer is too aggressive. It's not something I can whip up a cure for in a lab over a few weeks. The best he can do is chemotherapy to buy some time."
"Did you tell them that?"
"I replied to the email. The news will break soon. The Cabinet is going to scramble to find a new leader for Harmony Country."
She tilted her head to look at him. "Given your military record and public support, the conservative faction could easily push you to be the next President."
Lucian frowned, turning onto his side to face her. "Do you want me to be President?"
"I'm just wondering what you want."
"I belong to you," Lucian said firmly. "I'll advise whoever takes the office, but I'm not sacrificing the rest of my life for politics. I am never leaving your side again."
Loyce smiled, cupping his cheek and kissing him. "Looks like we're extending our vacation, then. I have to keep my husband hidden so he doesn't get drafted into the presidency."
"You'd better hide me well," he chuckled.
The news broke faster than expected. A month later, headlines globally announced President Harding's critical condition.
The Cabinet was in chaos. Forrest called, sounding exhausted.
"Your husband is the most wanted man on the planet right now. The old guard in the Cabinet won't leave me alone. They keep hinting that if Lucian runs, they'll back him 100 percent."
Loyce lounged on the sofa, rubbing her heavily pregnant belly. "He's not interested."
"I know," Forrest sighed. "But they're relentless. You two better stay off the grid until this blows over."
Loyce glanced at Lucian, who was currently in the kitchen meticulously juicing fresh oranges for her. "We're halfway across the globe. We're fine."
"How's my nephew?" Forrest asked, his tone softening. "You're due soon, right?"
"Two weeks," she replied.
"Grandpa and the rest of the family are flying out in a couple of days. Hank and I will be a little late. Morris is having a crisis. His assistant resigned, so he's a mess."
Loyce blinked. "Helena quit? Why?"
"Said she's moving back to her hometown to go on blind dates."
