Lanny lost his balance, stumbled backward, and knocked over his little chair before landing hard on his rear.
He sat stunned for a second before bursting into loud, wailing tears.
The classroom instantly erupted into chaos.
Ms. Windsor rushed over, pulling Gigi aside before kneeling down to check if Lanny was hurt.
"Gigi! You do not hit people!" Ms. Windsor's voice was sharp.
Gigi stood to the side, tears streaming down her face, but she clamped her mouth shut and didn't make a sound.
She didn't think she did anything wrong.
He started it by mocking her for not having a father.
He laughed at her first.
…
Giselle was at the office going over overseas fabric imports with Jean Morgan when her phone buzzed.
Seeing it was the preschool teacher, her heart instantly tightened. She answered immediately. "Hello? Ms. Windsor?"
"Hi, Gigi's mom. Could you please come to the school? Gigi got into a fight with a classmate today."
Giselle dropped the files in her hand, her face paling.
"A fight? Is she hurt?"
"She's fine, but the boy she pushed is crying uncontrollably. His parents are already here. Please come as soon as possible."
"I'm on my way."
Giselle hung up, grabbed her car keys, and bolted out the door.
Gigi getting into a fight? It was impossible.
She was the most well-behaved child. She never started conflicts, and this had never happened at her previous schools.
Giselle stepped hard on the gas, running a yellow light and making it to the preschool in record time.
Ms. Windsor was waiting for her outside the office door. She walked over, looking deeply conflicted.
"Gigi's mom, please don't panic. Here is what happened."
Ms. Windsor gave her a quick rundown of the incident.
Looking through the glass at her daughter standing quietly by the window with red, puffy eyes, Giselle's heart shattered.
