She Was the Treasure All Along novel Chapter 985

Gunfire erupts across the empty intersection. Instinctively, Helena ducks, her eyes darting through the muzzle flashes and sprinting figures, locking onto the back door of the SUV.

She can't see Morris. The crossfire is too intense. Bullets ricochet off her battered car, making her clap her hands over her ears. Her face is pale, twisted in absolute terror—a sight that Morris takes in entirely from where he is trapped.

Something heavy and inexplicable surges in his chest.

He doesn't understand. He truly doesn't understand. She is clearly terrified out of her mind, yet she still had the sheer audacity to pull a stunt like that to intercept them.

Why on earth would she do that?

His eyes remain glued to her. He wants to fight his way out to her, but in the chaos, someone yanks him by the arm, dragging him out of the vehicle and shoving him forward as a human shield.

"Let me go! Or I'll blow his brains out!"

"We're just doing a job!"

The hijackers are hysterical, entirely unaware that on the hillside in the distance, Loyce is currently peering through the scope of a sniper rifle. She was about to wipe them out herself, but she paused when she spotted Helena in the wrecked car.

While no one was looking, Helena had quietly slipped out of her vehicle, crawled over to a neutralized gunman, and desperately pried the pistol from his dead grip.

Loyce raises an eyebrow in amusement and temporarily holds her fire.

As Jedediah Thornton yanks Morris forward, Morris scans the chaotic crossfire, his eyes landing on her crushed sedan.

He doesn't see her.

Did she run?

*Good,* he thinks. *Maybe my restless heart will finally get some peace.*

Then Jedediah's voice roars in his ear. "Do you know why I'm doing this, Morris?"

Morris slowly turns his head, his gaze lingering on the older man for a long, quiet moment before he speaks with casual detachment. "Ah. Mr. Thornton. It's you."

"Did you think I'd forget?!" Jedediah looks half-mad, enraged by Morris's infuriating lack of panic.
