Morris whips his head around.
He sees her.
She is kneeling behind the bumper, her face smeared with dirt and sweat. Her forehead is scraped, a bead of blood trailing down her cheekbone. She's still gripping the gun, her shoulders trembling violently from the aftershock of the recoil.
Then, the guns go off.
Two bullets strike her almost simultaneously. One rips through the metal edge of the bumper she's hiding behind, sending a chunk of shrapnel slicing across her forearm.
The other takes her squarely in the left shoulder. The round punches in right beneath her collarbone and exits through her back, blowing out a fine mist of crimson blood.
She violently falls backward, the gun slipping from her fingers.
Morris sees the blood mist.
Something snaps inside his brain.
Morris is a man who can face absolutely anything with chilling composure. Only two things have ever breached his emotional walls: his parents' deaths, and his sister's disappearance. This is the third.
Without a single thought, his mask of apathy shatters. He completely loses control, sprinting toward her through the open gunfire.
Up on the hill, Loyce pulls the trigger, instantly taking out the remaining gunmen.
Standing up, she speaks into her comms. "Send the medics in. Helena took a bullet to the shoulder."
Morris drops to his knees, scooping Helena off the pavement and clamping his hand brutally over her wound.
She is shaking uncontrollably, her eyes wide with terror. Through the blinding agony, her voice comes out in broken gasps. "Am I... am I going to die?"
Blood surges from her shoulder, soaking his palm with a sickening heat, the metallic tang of copper flooding his senses.
"You're not going to die," he says. His tone carries its usual cool cadence, but his hands are trembling. He doesn't even realize that, for the first time in his life, he is feeling genuine fear.
He hadn't felt an ounce of panic when a gun was pressed to his own skull just seconds ago. But now, he is terrified.
Tears stream down her face from the excruciating pain. She breaks into desperate sobs. "It hurts so much."
"If you're this scared, why the hell did you play hero?" His grip tightens around her. "You should have minded your own business."
"You're my boss," she sniffles. "I failed to keep an eye on you. I have to take responsibility."
