Helena wakes up in the hospital. Her eyes feel like sandpaper. She tries to lift her arm to rub them, but a dull, tearing agony rips through her left shoulder, making black spots dance in her vision.
Her sluggish brain finally pieces together what happened.
She turns her head toward the nightstand to look for her bag, and freezes.
Morris is sitting in the chair by her bed, his fingers steepled over his knees, his dark eyes locked intensely on her face. The curtains behind him are only half-drawn, casting one side of his face in stark light and the other in deep shadow.
His intense stare sends a chill down her spine. Panic sets in as she registers her arm.
She aggressively grabs her left arm with her right hand. It's heavily bandaged, but she can't feel her fingers. A cold sweat breaks out over her forehead.
"My arm..." Her voice is frantic and hoarse. "Is my arm okay?! I can't feel it! Why can't I feel it?!"
Seeing her verge on a panic attack, Morris leans forward, placing a warm hand over her forearm. "The bullet missed the nerves. It's just the anesthesia. It hasn't worn off yet."
"Oh, thank God." Her tense muscles instantly deflate. Once her heart rate settles, she catches sight of the clock on the wall. 3:00 AM. "Have you been sitting here the whole time?"
He gives a slow nod.
She frowns slightly. "Where's Swain? Did he call? You really don't need to trouble yourself. Just let my boyfriend come take care of me. You're hurt too, you need rest."
*Her boyfriend.*
The phrase makes his stomach churn with disgust. "Do you hate me?" he asks quietly.
"No," she says, genuinely surprised. "Why would you think that? I just think it's more appropriate for Swain to be here. You need to recover."
Her words are painfully polite, dripping with the same cool distance she had before she passed out.
He ignores her logic, remaining perfectly still in the chair, his gaze unrelenting.
She thinks he's acting bizarre, but the heavy silence is suffocating. Licking her dry lips, she asks, "So... what we talked about. The debt is settled, right? We're even?"
"You said a lot of things before you passed out," he interrupts. "I heard every single word."
