She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 151

Friday evening, Lyra picked Caspian up from his university for dinner.

On the drive back, dusk had already settled over the city.

The evening breeze slipped through the half-rolled windows, carrying the crisp chill of the night.

Hands steady on the steering wheel, Lyra shot a quick glance at Caspian in the passenger seat.

It had been a while since they last saw each other, and it seemed he had grown even taller.

"Cas, your birthday is coming up. What do you want?"

Caspian watched the streetlights blur past the window, his voice soft. "Just a cake is fine."

Lyra couldn't help but smile. "That simple?"

"Yeah." He turned back, his gaze landing on her face with striking earnestness. "Just that simple."

"Alright," Lyra agreed with a laugh. "I actually know how to bake a chiffon cake. I'll make one for you myself."

"Thank you."

Caspian was in high spirits with the upcoming long holiday. Lounging in the passenger seat, he watched Lyra navigate the road. "Lyra, I heard the news recently. Fairchild Holdings developed some incredible technology."

Lyra hummed in agreement, her mood light.

"You know, Lyra, you've always been brilliant. Back when you were in college, a lot of the younger guys were totally into you. Even now at my campus, I still hear guys bring you up, just wishing you hadn't left your studies behind."

Lyra offered a faint smile.

Keeping her eyes on the road, the flattery barely left a ripple in her thoughts. Her college days felt like a lifetime ago. She had never paid attention to the boys confessing their crushes back then, so there was nothing to regret now.

A brief silence settled in the car before Caspian suddenly blurted out, "Actually, I like you too."

A flicker of surprise crossed Lyra's mind.

She was sharp enough to tell when a man was genuinely interested in her, so she merely brushed it off as polite, friendly banter.

Turning the steering wheel, Lyra mused, "If one day, I become utterly ruthless for the sake of Fairchild Holdings, would anyone still like someone like that?"

Caspian looked at her, entirely baffled. "Why would you say that? Fairchild Holdings is doing incredibly well right now. Why would you need to be ruthless?"

Lyra stared out into the heavy darkness of the night. "Cas, sometimes, we don't have a choice."

Caspian was taken aback. Rowan had asked the exact same question as Lyra. Was this some strange kind of telepathy?

The corner of Caspian's mouth twitched, his smile dimming slightly. "You should probably come up with the surprise yourself. It ruins the fun if I just tell you."

Rowan chuckled softly. "Alright, leave it to me."

...

The next day marked the start of the holiday week, yet the lights in the R&D Department were still blazing.

Lyra walked in to find Quentin and York still there, along with three or four other engineers whose names she couldn't quite place. "Aren't you all heading home?" she asked.

"Miss Fairchild, we're the legendary tribe of workaholics. We don't do home."

Lyra laughed, clapping her hands together. "Then let's all grab dinner tonight."

"Sounds great."

They had all grown quite close by now, and having dinner together felt as casual as a quick lunch break. Lyra suggested, "How about barbecue tonight? I know a place that's been super popular lately."
