"Don't ask. Just drive!"
The two women scrambled into the back seat. Once the car had pulled away from the estate, Lyra finally buried her trembling head in her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around herself.
"Lyra, it's going to be okay..." Maddie comforted her relentlessly.
Mr. Lawrence caught a glimpse of Lyra's distressed state in the rearview mirror. His eyes filled with heartache and concern. Instinctively, he pressed harder on the gas pedal, increasing their speed. He just wanted to get her home and away from that nightmare as quickly as possible.
The car sped all the way back to the Fairchild residence. The moment Lyra stepped through the door, a suffocating, heavy tension washed over her.
Shards of glass littered the living room floor; a water glass had been violently smashed to pieces.
Caleb had clearly already heard about what happened at the Chavez estate and was failing to contain his fury.
Seeing Lyra walk in, he grabbed her hand. "Come on, I'm taking you back there to demand justice."
"No sister of mine is going to be publicly humiliated and assaulted for nothing."
Lyra was exhausted to her core, her mind a chaotic mess. A wave of profound weakness hit her. "Caleb, please. Just let me have a moment of peace, okay?"
Standing nearby, Delilah's face was livid and filled with bitter regret.
When the Chavez family sent a car, she never should have softened. She had told herself they used to be friends and it wouldn't hurt for her daughter to attend the engagement, but she never imagined...
Kayla gently tried to soothe the furious Delilah.
But Delilah remained swallowed by guilt.
Lyra rushed up to her bedroom on the second floor.
Kayla turned to Caleb. "Don't push her right now. Let her rest."
Delilah quickly nodded in agreement.
Lyra stepped into her room and collapsed onto the sofa. The thought of that chaotic scene being witnessed by everyone made her stomach churn. Jasmine had been there, relishing the show. Rowan had been there, too. Every bit of her vulnerability, embarrassment, and degradation had been put on full display.
Her pride was completely shattered.
Caleb tried to hold his temper overnight, but couldn't. First thing the next morning, he marched straight over to the Chavez estate.
