Chapter 39
“Lyra-” Caleb’s voice pulled her from her thoughts. She was staring at her phone. “Mom and Dad just texted. They’re already there.”
Her parents’ message also included a strict warning for Lyra to watch her mouth-specifically, forbidding her from mentioning anything about dating Caspian in front of the old man.
They didn’t want to upset Mr. Jameson.
“We’re almost there,” Caleb noted.
Caleb had taken two wrong turns, putting them slightly behind. By the time they pulled up to the sprawling Jameson estate, the place was already packed.
It wasn’t just her parents’ car in the driveway. Lyra instantly recognized Waylon and Lucas’s vehicles.
Stepping into the massive foyer, she realized Waylon’s and Lucas’s parents were there as well.
“Ah, Lyra and Caleb are here!” Alistair Jameson’s face lit up the moment he saw the Fairchild siblings. He had watched Lyra grow up and fully intended for her to be his future granddaughter.
“Mr. Jameson,” Lyra greeted warmly, having missed the old patriarch.
“Come, come, Lyra, sit right here next to me. I don’t know when you’re finally going to drop the ‘Mr. and just call me Grandpa, but I tell you, this old man is losing his patience waiting for you to officially join the family.”
The living room was crowded. Waylon’s and Lucas’s parents exchanged awkward, knowing glances. Everyone in their social circle was well aware of Jasmine’s existence by now. Rowan had been publicly flaunting his relationship with her, yet Alistair seemed completely, blissfully ignorant of the situation.
Rowan sat nearby, utterly silent.
He didn’t even glance in Lyra’s direction.
Waylon and Lucas shared a look. Lucas let out a quiet scoff, shooting a mocking smirk at Lyra.
Lyra’s expression remained perfectly neutral.
She simply continued chatting warmly with the old man.
Arthur and Delilah, however, looked profoundly uncomfortable. They knew about Jasmine, but they
had no idea how serious Rowan was about her. Would he actually marry the girl?
Would Rowan truly be willing to forfeit his thirty percent stake in the Jameson Group just for Jasmine?
It seemed impossible.
“Lyra, you made it.” Caspian came jogging down the stairs. Remembering his duty as her “boyfriend,” he dutifully walked over and stood right by her side.
Lyra offered a soft smile. “Yeah.”
Maisie, who had spent the night at the estate, stood at the top of the stairs, watching the exchange and rolling her eyes so hard they nearly stuck.
Realizing she had stepped on a landmine, Isabella quickly backpedaled. “But Lyra has such a sweet temper. Anyone can see she’s destined for a blessed life.”
Alistair chuckled warmly. “Of course she is.”
Lyra had to suppress a bitter laugh.
In her past life, she had watched her parents die, her brother die, and even her unborn niece or nephew ripped from existence. Was that what they called a blessed life?
And every bit of that “blessing” had been orchestrated by Rowan.
After dinner, Alistair spoke up again. “Rowan, go spend some quality time with Lyra.”
Lyra had fully planned on sneaking off to Caspian’s room, but now she was forced to improvise. “Actually, Grandpa, I had some things I needed to ask Cas about.”
Alistair, completely unsuspicious, smiled. “Go right ahead, then.”
Lucas furrowed his brow, leaning in to whisper to Rowan. “Since when does she hang out with brother?”
your
Rowan watched Lyra walk away, then coolly pulled his gaze back. “She claims they’re dating.”
“What?!” Lucas’s jaw practically hit the floor.
