Chapter 38
Caspian hung up the phone, amused, and turned to Lyra. “Let’s head back.”
“You go ahead and take Maisie. I can just grab a cab,” Lyra offered, knowing full well Maisie wouldn’t want to share a car with her.
“It’s the holidays; finding a cab right now is going to be a nightmare. Besides, it’s on the way…”
“Alright.”
Caspian drove them to pick up Maisie.
Her two friends had already vanished.
Maisie slid into the backseat, eyes glued to her phone, completely pretending Lyra didn’t exist.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Lyra turned around. “Maisie, let me add you on social media.”
Maisie kept scrolling, acting completely deaf.
Keeping his eyes on the road, Caspian intervened. “I’ll send you her contact info later.”
“Sounds good,” Lyra smiled, completely unbothered.
After dropping Lyra off, Caspian sped away.
In the car, Caspian shot a warning glance in the rearview mirror. “Don’t you dare say a word of this to Grandpa.”
“Why shouldn’t I tell him you’re dating a woman three years older than you? Oh, and the fact that she’s your brother’s ex-fiancée?”
“Because if you open your mouth, Grandpa is going to find out about Jasmine.”
Desperate to ensure Alistair wouldn’t do anything to break up Rowan and Jasmine, Maisie crossed her arms and angrily agreed to keep quiet.
That evening, Lyra was in her father’s study.
Delilah walked in carrying a steaming bowl of warm dessert. “Here, sweetie, just have a little bit. It’s for good luck in the New Year.”
Lyra’s mood lifted instantly. She hugged her mother, leaning in playfully. “Can I just have two bites? I ate so much at dinner, I seriously can’t fit another thing…”
“Just two bites, then. I’ll finish the rest.”
Lyra took a small bite of the sweet pastry. Looking at both her parents, she set the spoon down. “Mom, Dad, since you’re free for the holidays, why don’t you guys take a trip to Sydney? Didn’t Dad say he wanted to see where Grandpa used to build his business?”
Both of her grandparents had passed away long ago, so Lyra had no ancestral hometown to return to. Her grandfather, however, had spent years grinding it out in Sydney during his prime.
She had to go to the Jameson estate first.
Determined to get her parents out of the country, Lyra agreed to the visit.
The destination was the grand Jameson estate.
The family of four took two separate cars. Her parents drove together, while Lyra rode with Caleb.
Growing up, Caleb practically lived at the Jameson estate. He and Rowan were the exact same age, and they had been incredibly close as kids. The two of them, along with Waylon Grayson, were inseparable all throughout high school. When exactly had things started to change?
Probably when Rowan started college. Both families had begun heavily hinting at the arranged marriage, and Rowan had become increasingly withdrawn and silent.
Looking back, Caleb realized that must have been when Rowan’s resentment started brewing.
To create distance from Lyra-who had joyfully enrolled in the exact same university during his junior year-Rowan abruptly packed up and moved abroad.
By the time Rowan returned to join the corporate world, his friendship with Caleb had cooled entirely.
Eventually, Rowan only associated with Waylon and Lucas.
In hindsight, it was brutally obvious. Rowan had never liked Lyra.
