Chapter 110
Harvey Prescott.
“She will, Mrs. Marie.” I heard the question and I answer, as I enter.
Winny’s face cracks under that makeup.

Jennifer looks at me like I don’t know the gravity of what her mother just asked. As if I wandered into a minefield with my eyes closed. But I know it perfectly.
Now that I’ve solved the fucking Don issue and invoked a party that he definitely doesn’t want in his zone, he won’t even touch an ant that steps into my domain so my mother can come back into my life.
I’ve got to let Jennifer learn about the entirety of that later.
“Amazing.” Mrs. Marie claps her hands together, already moving on because she got what she wanted. “We have these ties you need to try on-”
“Your father always goes with the French. There’s no need to always think about another option. It’s the Prescott way.”
I tilt my head away from Winny who spoke. “What’s the other option?”
“Italian,” the event planner squeaks from somewhere to my left.
I look at Jennifer. She’s wearing this stunning dress….two thin straps holding it up on her collarbones. She’s not wearing a bra…I can tell from the way her breasts sit under that fabric. I am usually looking so I notice that.
Her hair is swept away from her neck, and I usually love taking the pin out of it, watching it fall over her skin while I kiss her. One night not sharing a room with her has done this damage to me. I guess it’s the new husband fever.
“Sir. Italian-”
“That’ll do.” I walk forward.
“Great.” Jen’s mom smiles, and I can tell it’s a victory from the way Winny frowns.
“Now, food, guests. Winny was saying your side of the family would have a lot on the guest list. What number did she count it to: A hundred?”
I stop walking. “That much?”
I whisper it, looking at Jennifer. She pours herself a glass of water and drinks like I’m not even in the room.
“Yes, Harvey-
“I hope Steven is not on that list. I say, still looking at Jennifer as she shrugs that water down. Why isn’t she looking at me? What’s so good about the water?
“But everyone else is invited?” Winny presses.
“Yeah.”
“I was just telling your new mother-in-law that I am fit to take care of the event. I am a Prescott. I know what a Prescott wedding is supposed to look like.”

“My mom is a wedding planner.” Jennifer exhales. “She’s done really exclusive weddings. This one is a tip for her, but she has a degree in these sorts of events. She literally wrote a paper on the correct fork for a fish course.”
Mrs. Marie stares at me almost glaringly. I’ve seen her enough times to read that she’s a very confident woman and now she’s making it clear with that eye stare that if I don’t let her do as she pleases, she’ll probably take her daughter away.
1 put a hand on my chest like I’m pledging allegiance. “Of course. Feel free.”
“Good boy,” she says, brightening instantly. “Jennifer, you married a good boy.”
“Mom-”
“We can do it together, Winny. I’ll need some details from you, of course.” She turns to Jennifer at once. “And Jennifer, go help Harvey try on the tie, please.”
“He’s a grown man. He can dress himself!”
“Are you two fighting?” her mother asks, eyes flicking between us.
Before Jennifer can say anything sharper, I’m already moving toward her.
“No, we’re not,” I say. “She’s just mad I’m late.”
The event planner scurries into the changing room to roll the ties out. I reach for Jennifer’s fingers, just a touch to calm her down. It pisses her off instead. She punches me in the arm.
“Jennifer, don’t do that to your husband!” Mrs. Marie calls from the other room.
“Mom, you didn’t see him-”
I step into the room first, and the planner waits until both of us are inside before starting her speech.
“So, sir, these are Italian spectrum ties, all suitable for a wedding day. The color of your suit is white-” She keeps going. Something about couture shirts. Flowers stitched into the fabric. Embroidery that matches the theme. What prince wore this exact style. How exclusive it is. How no one else will have it.
“I want a black suit,” I say immediately. “Same with the pants. I’m not a dove.
Her eyebrows go up so high I’m surprised they don’t fly off her face. Probably the stress of planning this wedding. Poor woman. “Black?” she repeats, like I just asked her to set something on fire,
“Well, of course, sir. We would look for something in that color. But please, try the tie.”
“Take off your clothes, Jennifer says.
The planner goes rigid.
Jennifer blinks, then seems to realize exactly how that sounded. What she really means is that she wants to see if I’m hiding any injuries under my shirt, if I’ve got bruises or blood or anything else that would tell her where I’ve been and why I came late. She’s sharp enough to read between the lines.
saw the missed calls on my phone. Heard David’s voice as he showed me she was calling-
The event planner looks between us like she’s witnessing a crime.
Jennifer’s mouth opens, closes, opens again. “I meant she starts, and I can see her scrambling for a better way to put it.

“It’s fine. Newlyweds are usually like this. The planner excuses herself faster than I’ve ever seen anyone move.
Jennifer’s head follows her out.
“hat’s not even what I-”
“Oh.” I cough the laugh into my hand. When she looks at me, I do my best to cut it short.
Focus.
“Where were you?”
“Um, playing golf with a business partner-”
“Harvey!” she snaps, and I can already tell she’s decided she hates the answer.
“With Jenna’s dad. I was laying a warning.” I drop the act and pull my hoodie off so she can see I’m not injured, no bruises, no bandages, no bullet holes. I rest it on the arm of the couch. Jennifer’s eyes go over my body then behind me like she’s checking for exit wounds.
“Can I see the feet too?” she asks.
“Jesus, Jen.”
Her brow furrows. “So Jenna’s words weren’t just a threat.”
“Of course, they were. I just couldn’t have you thinking that.”
Her eyes glow at how truthful I’m being. “Wow. So, you lied to me-”
“No.” I step closer, lowering my voice. “I was trying to keep my wife’s heart from running wild over something I was going to handle either way. You didn’t need to be scared before I fixed it.”
“How the hell did you fix it?”
“Let’s just say I found out Moretti has been playing games with one of the biggest faction organizations in the world. And once I had that card, he knew exactly what it meant. If I pulled it, him and his family would be erased so fast it’d look like they never existed at all. So he dropped to his knees and begged. I let him keep his life.”
Jennifer squints. Blinks. Processes.
“That old… scary man went on his knees.”
“Trust me. I’m scarier.”
“That’s not something to be proud of.”
