Chapter 11
Whitney Moore, you’d better tell me this is a joke. I’ll never allow you to break up with Carter, Samuel snapped.
Whitney shrugged, her tone flat. “What can I say, Dad? We’re already broken up.”
Samuel shot to his feet, his hand flying up as if to slap her.
But Whitney stepped back, dodging out of reach. “Dad, getting slapped once was more than enough. No way I’m just going to stand here and let you slap me a second time”
Samuel paced anxiously, his voice sharp. “Carter agreed to this? Our families have an engagement. He can’t just break it off.
“He doesn’t need to agree. This isn’t some ancient era. Don’t tell me you don’t get what it means to have a choice in who I date,” Whitney retorted.
“Whitney, you’d better think twice. If you really go through with breaking off the engagement, you’ll be the one paying for your grandma’s fees in the nursing home,” Samuel said coldly.
“That’s 160,000 dollars a year. Are you sure you’re ready for that?” he added.
Whitney was burning with rage. She thought bitterly, ‘Is this really my dad? Is this the same man who used to lift me up and push me on the swings? He’s actually using Grandma’s nursing home fees to threaten me?’
“Dad, that’s your mother,” Whitney snapped. “You’re supposed to look after her.”
Samuel kept his cool. “The Moore family is about to go bankrupt. How am I supposed to afford such a luxurious nursing home for her? Why don’t you bring her home and take care of her yourself?”
Whitney let out a bitter laugh, her anger boiling over. “Fine, I’ll pay for it. From now on, Grandma is my responsibility. You don’t have to worry about her anymore.”
etenses gone, Whitney slammed the door hard and stormed out.
e secretary’s office was left in shock.
was that? She actually dared to lose her temper at Mr. Harris?” someone whispered.
an shook her head, replying, “Don’t pry.”
Samuel had made it clear they weren’t supposed to gossip, so Sarah kept her mouth shut.
Instead, she quietly sent a message to Laura.
Laura glanced at her phone and let out a chilly laugh. “Tina, looks like Whitney has pissed off your dad again.”
Mom, what did she do? Why is she always causing drama?” Tina grumbled. “I was just hoping Dad would get me a new car.”
about the car later. Your dad’s in a terrible mood today. Just be patient, sweetie. One day,
it to wait, she just had to go along with it.
Chapter 11
Carter woke up with a splitting headache, still groggy from last night’s bender. He sat up fast, confused by the unfamiliar
Emily walked in, dressed in comfy loungewear and carrying a cup.
Carter, you were totally out of it last night, so I had to drag you back to my apartment. Here, I just made some hangover soup. Drink it, and you’ll feel better,” Emily said, her tone gentle.
Carter’s memory was patchy, but he did recall drinking with his buddies before everything went fuzzy.
“Emily, thanks for looking after me. Where did you sleep last night?” Carter asked.
Emily’s place was pretty cramped, with only one small bedroom.
Emily’s cheeks flushed as she replied, “The bed is pretty big, and I was worried you might need something in the middle of the night, so I just slept here too.
“Relax, Carter. I won’t say a word to Whitney”
Carter was caught off guard, feeling a bit uneasy all of a sudden.
“Alright. I need to head to the office, so I’ll get going now,” he said, trying to sound casual.
Once he was dressed. Carter grabbed his phone and headed for the door. “Milly, this place is way too cramped. Let me buy you a bigger house.”
Emily gave him a sweet smile. “Sounds great. Thanks, Carter.”
*****When Carter got to the office, he felt totally out of sorts.
He kept glancing at his phone, scrolling up and down, but not a single text or call came through.
Out of nowhere, anxiety gripped him. He wondered, ‘Is Whitney really serious about breaking up this time?‘
Carter called his secretary, Zoe Potter. “Can you get in touch with Whitney Moore from PrimeBridge Law Firm and ask her to drop by the office?”
“Sure, Mr. Harris,” Zoe replied.
“And don’t mention it’s me who wants to see her,” Carter added just before hanging up.
Zoe was a bit confused. She wondered, ‘When did Boss start caring so much about a junior lawyer?‘
“Got it, Mr. Harris. I’ll reach out to her right away,” Zoe said.
‘She really thinks she can just dump me and move on?‘ Carter thought, his jaw clenched. ‘It’s not that simple.
Whitney had just paid off the full amount of her house yesterday, and now, she only had 60,000 dollars left in all her bank accounts–barely enough to cover her grandma’s nursing home fees for three and a half months.
Her grandma, Patricia Moore, used to live with Samuel in the villa.
But she wasn’t in good health and enjoyed quietness, while Laura would start belting out opera every morning.
