Whitney deleted the message, but when she got downstairs, she found Samuel’s car and his people waiting for her. Frank gave a curious glance at the welldressed, cultured man. Whitney, is that your dad?

Whitney replied softly, Frank, you go on up and let Ivan know I’ll be a bit late.

Then, she calmly headed toward Samuel’s car.

Whit, did you see the message I sent you?Samuel asked.

Whitney gave a faint smile. Yeah, I saw it. And I deleted it.

What?Samuel was instantly furious.

You’re getting more and more rude these days. You just ignore your own father’s messages now?he snapped.

Whitney scoffed, So you think I’m being rude? Let’s talk about your wife. She drugged me and tried to have her own nephew assault me. And you, my dad, want me to act as if nothing happened?

I couldn’t let this go. Why should I drop the charges?she shot back.

Samuel had no idea what really happened. His daughter and his wife were telling two completely different stories.

He frowned. You were drugged? Laura would never do something like that. Are you sure it was not a mistake?

A mistake? Wasn’t it she who drugged me, shoved me into a car, and kept me locked up last time? So now she’s magically nnocent?Whitney shot back.

Or maybe you knew everything, and you’re just covering for her?Whitney challenged him.

Samuel hissed under his breath, Don’t be ridiculous. She just told me she wanted you two to meet up. How was I supposed o know anything else?

Look, I really think this is all just a misunderstanding. At worst, her nephew can just say sorry, and we’ll call it even,he said. trying to brush it off.

Whitney felt a surge of anger, her voice dropping cold. Dad, you’d rather trust someone else than your own daughter, huh?

Samuel retorted, This someone else is Laura, and she’s my wife. She’s the woman I’ve shared my life with for more than twenty years!

Whitney let out a cold laugh. No way I’m dropping the case. The evidence is airtight. Instead of wasting your breath tryin to convince me, you’d be better off hiring him a decent lawyer.

Otherwise, when he spills the truth about your wife, and it blows up in the media, your company’s stock will nosedive again,” she added, her tone icy.

Whitney strode off, unfazed by Samuel’s helpless rage echoing behind her. She didn’t hesitate, not for a second

After Patricia passed away, Whitney had no one left she could truly call family

And Samuel? He just kept reminding her, time and again, what selfishness looked like and how take a father’s love could really be.

Back at the law firm, Whitney and Frank put in some extra hours, reviewing and analyzing the current documents for any legal risks. Once they were done, they sent everything over to Ivan’s inbox

Only then did they finally call it a day.

At 7:30, Frank offered, Hey, want to grab some sushi downstairs to tide us over?

Whitney glanced at her phone, saw the caller ID flashing, and politely declined. Not tonight, thanks

Just as she expected, Laura’s idiot nephew had ratted her out.

Officer, I keep telling you. I didn’t drug her,Travis protested.

Then how do you explain these hospital records? She’s got injuries, and she was hit with a pretty strong dose of aphrodisiar And you just happened to end up in the women’s restroom. So, was it sexual harassment or attempted rape?” the officer pressed.

Travis looked terrified.

Officer, how could I possibly be a rapist? I didn’t rape her. I swear, I didn’t drug her, he stammered.

So how come everything lines up so perfectly? If you can’t give me a straight answer, you’re not getting out of here.the officer pressed.

Travis freaked out at that. It wasn’t me, I swear. My aunt did. I swear I didn’t know she would pull something like that. I >ersonally thought that was not right.”

All of it was caught on the security cameras.

What no one noticed was Klein, standing behind the oneway mirror, his eyes fixed coldly on the man inside the nterrogation room.

The deputy chief tried to smooth things over. Mr. Harris, the suspect has confessed. He and his accomplice drugged the victim and tried to use force to harass and humiliate her. There’s no way he’s getting away with this.

Klein lowered his gaze, his voice icy. I expect you to handle this with absolute fairness. Make sure every single culprit is brought to justice.”

Yes, sir, absolutely, the deputy chief replied, his voice full of urgency.

With that, Klein strode out without another word.

The deputy chief couldn’t help but wipe the cold sweat from his brow as he watched Klein leave.

He never imagined a minor case like this would attract such a heavyweight

Someone from Travisfamily had already tried to pull some strings and get the suspect off the hook, but now that Klein was involved, all bets were off.

The deputy chief immediately told his wife to quickly return the gifts they’d just accepted

There was no way he could help Travis out. If he did, he’d be risking his own neck

When Samuel got home and heard Tina say Laura had been taken in by the cops, he broke out in a cold sweat

Dad, you have to help Mom.Tina pleaded, her voice trembling.

Samuel’s face darkened with anger. Help her? She’s always getting herself into these dumb messes. If this blows up. our company is going to be in serious trouble.

Tina’s eyes were red from crying. But Dad, you can’t just ignore Mom. Why don’t you go talk to Whit? She’s the one who started all this. How could she call the cops and get Travis thrown in jail?

Stop crying. I’ll call her,Samuel said.

He called up his inlaws, only to find out they’d already tried to grease the wheels with the deputy chief. The guy had taken heir bribe, but he had just handed it right back.

Samuel felt a chill run down his spine. Returning the gifts meant the law was going to run its course.

With a heavy heart, Samuel sent Whitney another message.

This time, Samuel’s text sounded much more humble.

Samuel: [Whit, let’s just sit down and talk, just the two of us. No need to rush into anything. We can figure this out together. kay? I’ll be at the office tomorrow. Can you come by so we can have a real conversation?]

Whitney turned off her phone.

t was time for a real conversation.

Klein, you dragged me out in the middle of the night just to help you drown your sorrows?Dustin grumbled.

Klein’s usually pale skin carried a faint flush as he muttered, Ever had someone want you at first, and then suddenlynot?
