The Leighton Estate looked grand at first glance, but anyone who remembered the past knew that Leighton Pharmaceuticals had been far more glorious three years earlier.
Back then, every branch of the family lived in sprawling estates. They all had limited–edition sports cars lined up outside their doors. Now the most expensive vehicle left was a million–dollar minivan.
And the reason for their fall was the family’s most gifted daughter in medicine–Roxanne. She had stolen the Leighton family’s treasured life–saving drug and given it to an outsider who had nothing to do with them.
Not only had this caused catastrophic losses, but once their rivals in the pharmaceutical world also learned that the Leightons no longer possessed their famed ancestral pill… Well, they wasted no time banding together and suppressing their businesses.
The Leightons hadn’t gone bankrupt, but they were a shadow of what they used to be.
“Sigh…”
Patriarch Thaddeus Leighton let out a heavy breath within the estate’s council hall. One issue had been weighing on him lately, and the entire Leighton family was watching it closely.
“That Stone girl still hasn’t agreed?” Thaddeus asked.
“No. Ms. Stone hasn’t accepted nor rejected. Right now, we’ve just been left hanging,” Wendy Leighton, Roxanne’s younger cousin, replied.
The furrow between Thaddeus‘ brows deepened. He opened his mouth to speak, but someone burst through the doorway before he could. “Sir! Sir! Someone is groveling at the front gate!”
“What? Someone’s kneeling outside? Who?”
“Ms. Roxanne!”
A thunderous jolt went through the room. Thaddeus shot to his feet, disbelief filling his eyes. The next second, he exploded as he spat, “The nerve she has to return! Does she not remember who practically destroyed this family? How dare she show her face here!”
“Exactly! She must want us to take her back. She’d even gone as far as to grovel. Well, no way!” Wendy shouted after him.
r Every Leighton present wore the same expression of utter disgust and disdain.
“Let her grovel all she wants. I dare anyone to open that door!” Thaddeus said coldly. Then, he turned to Wendy. “Visit the Stone family again. We must get a final answer today. We need a clear answer on whether they’ll let us collaborate on the ancient formula.”
“Yes, Grandfather.”

Wendy was about to leave when Thaddeus added, “Use the back door. I don’t want that wretched girl seeing a single one of us.
Among the gathered family stood a middle–aged couple whose expressions wavered with conflict. They looked as if they wanted to speak. They eventually swallowed their words, and the moment to speak passed.
Evan arrived at Stone’s Apothecary to begin the day’s lesson when someone hurried over to report, “Ms. Stone, the Leighton Pharmaceuticals people are here to see you again.”
