Chapter 166 No Allies, No Escape

Evan figured Gaius and Ivana already knew that Cain would arrive in Silverton the next day and would absolutely step in for him. However, he refused to let anyone get involved. He wanted to settle this himself. Thus, he called each of them in turn.

The first person he contacted was Gaius, the Iron Dragon. “Old Mr. Stanton, it’s me. There’s something I need to tell you. Please don’t help me with Mr. Solomon. Let me handle this alone.

“The grudge between Mr. Solomon and me is mine to settle, and I don’t want anyone else involved.”

Gaius, who was still recuperating at the nursing home, was taken aback. “Huh? Oh, I see. I understand.” 1

He had fully intended to intervene, but he caved to Evan’s request when he saw how insistent the young man was. Besides, he trusted Evan to know exactly what he was doing.

“And please tell Ivana not to step in either,” Evan continued.

Gaius instinctively glanced at Ivana beside him, looking even more surprised. How did the boy know his daughter was with him?

“Sure, I’ll let her know.”

Ivana clearly knew far more than she let on. The Cortex Team had not only uncovered evidence that Darius had been reselling gemstones, but they had also arrested the group responsible for forging the

evidence.

She believed Cain wasn’t the type to ignore right and wrong. Still, they wouldn’t hesitate to intervene and save Evan if the proof they’d given Cain wasn’t enough to make him revisit his decision to go after Evan.

Evan then called the mayor.

Sean happened to be with Zachariah, discussing strategies for dealing with Cain’s arrival the next day. When they suddenly received Evan’s call, the two of them froze. Zachariah especially looked stunned.

‘Is Evan scared out of his mind? He’s telling the mayor not to intervene? He might still have a shot at survival if Sean shields him. But now he’s telling Sean to stay out of it? Has he lost his mind? Does he not care about his life anymore?’

He had visited Sean’s home before and knew the mayor’s stance. To his surprise, Sean said, “Oh, alright. I won’t intervene.”

Zachariah’s face drained of color in an instant, acting as if he’d just seen a ghost. “Mr. Laurent, aren’t you on Evan’s side? Why did you agree to his ridiculous request?”

Sean responded with a faint smile and nothing more. He wouldn’t have dared show such confidence if it weren’t for that call. That was because he understood exactly what the young man meant upon receiving

Evan didn’t want anyone involved because he had something up his sleeve.

“If Mr. Solomon has any sense at all, nothing will happen. But if he even thinks about laying a hand on Evan… Silverton will become his burial ground.”

Zachariah only grew more confused. Alas, only Sean had a glimpse of the truth and wasn’t willing to share it.

After that, Victor, Aria, Tyson of the Ironclaw Vanguard, and Seth of the Black Fang Unit all received a call from Evan. The message was identical-don’t interfere in anything involving Cain; he would resolve it alone.

They were beyond frustrated. They had all been ready to seize this chance to show their loyalty. Aria especially was burning with emotion. Her face had healed. The ointment Evan had given her was miraculous.

The scabs on her face and body had fallen away after applying it for a few days. To her, he hadn’t just saved her. No, he’d also given her a second chance at life.

So, she had nearly charged out with a blade when she heard that Cain was baying for Evan’s blood. Now that her shot at ripping at Cain was taken away, it left her antsy, as she had nowhere to vent her righteous fury.

“You’ll get your chance,” Victor could only tell her.

They wouldn’t act this time, but all four armies were on stand-by. They were all waiting for a moment when they could fight for Evan.

As Evan made call after call, one influential figure after another stepped back from the matter. Not only that, Sean and Zachariah even released public statements, declaring they would not intervene in anything involving Cain.

They urged Cain to be wise, to let no villain slip through the cracks, and never to wrong an innocent

person.

The entire Silverton elite circle erupted. Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya were stunned when they heard the

news.

“Look! The mayor just issued a public statement!”

The three of them breathed hard as they finished reading Sean’s announcement, their hearts pounding

the entire time.

“The mayor not only won’t interfere with Mr. Solomon, but he actually hopes Mr. Solomon will find the real culprit fairly and impartially? Is he hinting at something?”

“Even the deputy mayor released a statement! Just like Mr. Wells, he was one of the guarantors three years ago!”

“God, it looks like everyone with half a brain is distancing themselves. They’re terrified of being dragged

into this mess. Hazel, you were right. We really can’t protect Evan!”

The three of them shook in their boots.

The deputy mayor was an even more important guarantor than Hugo. Yet, even he was cutting ties! That alone showed how serious things had become. Evan really had no one left to rely on, no one but himself.

Hazel immediately grinned as the image of Evan kneeling before her to beg flashed across her mind. Just the thought of it sent a delightful zing down her spine.
