Chapter 217 Pride Versus Regret
She clutched her head, on the verge of breaking down.
This was truly a dead end.
She felt guilty toward Evan, and she knew she had deeply hurt him at the banquet.
But at that moment, she simply hadn’t been able to think about anything else. There was no way she could handle both men at
the same time.
In the heat of the moment, her entire attention had been on Zeke how could she possibly spare a thought for Evan?
Now that everything had already happened, Hazel wanted to make it up to him. But she had no idea how. Her mind felt like a tangled mess.
“Hazel, you can’t blame yourself for this. With Zeke’s temper, he was bound to fome and cause a scene the moment he found out. You did the right thing by calming him down first. Evan just happened to get the short end of the stick.”
“Exactly. It’s not that big a deal. Just go explain things to Evan. He loves you so much-he’ll definitely forgive you!”
Roxanne and Anya both tried to comfort her.
Anya, especially, was casual about the whole thing. In her eyes, the banquet hadn’t been a total loss.
At the very least, they had learned something important-Evan still loved them.
Back then, he had only walked away because he couldn’t swallow his pride. So as long as Hazel lowered herself a little and apologized, Evan would surely forgive her.
However, Hazel wasn’t nearly as optimistic.
“No. This time is different. Anya, you’re underestimating a man’s pride. Why did Evan leave us in the first place? Because of his pride. Zeke’s appearance hurt that pride.
“What happened today is the same thing-only worse. Right now… Evan probably has completely given up on me.”
When she imagined the situation from his perspective, a chill ran down her spine.
Everything they could foresee, Evan could certainly foresee as well.
Once the divorce went through, Cain would move against him. So when he saw her run after Zeke and leave him standing there at the banquet… How desperate must he have felt?
What he was losing wasn’t just love. It was his life.

For a moment, even Anya fell silent. She had never imagined that a single impulsive phone call from her would trigger such serious consequences. She had practically pushed Evan to the brink of death.
“Hazel,” Roxanne suddenly said, her tone serious, “I think you have to swallow your pride this time. You can’t act the way you used to–so high and mighty. You need to explain everything to Evan, and you need to apologize to him. After that, the two of you should revoke the divorce application.”
Her words stunned the girls. Hazel and Anya’s expressions changed instantly, both staring at her in disbelief. Especially Hazel
Lower herself to Evan? Apologize to him? What kind of idea was that?
The thought hit Hazel like a thunderclap. She had never imagined a day when she would have to bow her head to Evan, not to mention apologize to him.
She simply couldn’t do it.

“You hurt him badly this time,” Roxanne continued. “You humiliated him in front of the entire Silverton elite circle. If you don’t swallow your pride and give him something to hold on to, how could things possibly go back to the way they were?”
Anya nodded in agreement. “That’s right, Hazel. Evan is head over heels for you. As long as you take the initiative, lower your pride, and apologize so he knows you still care about him, everything will be solved. Honestly, that’s the only solution right now
But Hazel’s expression darkened.
They were right. It was the only solution.
Yet revoking the divorce application would also mean admitting she had bowed her head to Evan. For someone as proud as Hazel, that was completely unacceptable.
Yes, she had made a mistake. Yes, she felt guilty. Yes, she knew she had wronged Evan. But that didn’t mean she was willing to
humble herself before him. 1
Feeling guilty and bowing her head were two entirely different things. How could someone as proud as her swallow her pride and take back the divorce? To her, that was far too difficult.
An intense discomfort rose in Hazel’s chest, and her mood sank to its lowest point.
“Isn’t there any other way?” she asked.
Roxanne froze. She had already made it perfectly clear that this was the only solution. But looking at Hazel’s expression, she immediately understood. Hazel simply couldn’t swallow her pride.
Some people were just like that. They could recognize their mistakes. They could even feel guilty about them.
But actually lowering their head and apologizing? That was something they simply refused to do.
As if apologizing would kill them.
