Chapter 223 Who’s Really Afraid?
Hazel balled her fists, willing herself to keep her gaze fixed forward.
‘What if he sees me turn around and get it into his head that I’m regretting my decision? No. He need know exactly where he stands. How dare he try to threaten me! He’s nothing without me. Does he re think waving divorce in my face will scare me?
‘Please. He’s the one who’s afraid of the divorce.’
Meanwhile, Evan’s expression darkened.
The divorce was still up in the air, gnawing at him more than he would ever confess. What stung mos was Hazel’s silence about why she summoned him to the courthouse. He couldn’t believe that he
actually thought she was finally ready to end it all.
That fragile hope had gone up in smoke in the face of her series of actions. Now, his hopes and dream of freedom lay shattered on the pavement.
Still, he shoved the thought aside.
He figured he could afford to be a little more patient as there were only five days left in the cooling-off period. Besides, he had already come this far, five more days felt insignificant.
Evan betrayed none of the confusion or panic Hazel anticipated. If anything, he seemed utterly unmove
On the other hand, the crowd of silent watchers had swelled.
Ever since the Solberg banquet, more and more people had started to keep an eye on him. The shadows at his back multiplied as each day passed.
He came to an abrupt halt and spun to face them. “Go back and tell Gabriel. He doesn’t have to wait for
the divorce to kill me. He can just do it right now.”
A thick silence settled over the silent observers.
The watchers gaped at him, stunned. ‘Is he actually provoking Mr. Gabriel?”
Although they were utterly baffled, not a single one dared to move. Instead, they relayed his every word to Gabriel, not daring to omit a single detail.
As Gabriel listened to the report, the Four Martial Servants at his side bristled with murderous intent.
“That brat has a death wish,” one of them growled. “We should grant it!”
“He’s trying to use me to pressure Hazel.” Gabriel raised a hand and stopped them. “Interesting. I thought dealing with the Norwood family and Evan would be boring. It turns out he’s full of surprises.”
Then, his tone shifted. “How many from the Norwood family have died so far?”
“Almost 30 of them are dead,” someone replied. “Close to 50 if you include their associates.”

A slow, cruel smile crept across Gabriel’s lips. “Death is mercy. They should suffer before their ult demise. Let Evan see what happens to anyone connected to the Norwood family.”
“Understood,” the Four Martial Servants responded.
Ironically, Gabriel’s schemes had unwittingly played into Hazel’s hands.
However, she felt far from victorious.
She had felt a sense of satisfaction as she walked away, tasting the sweetness of victory on her tor
Still, the feeling vanished almost instantly.
The longer she dwelt on it, the more unsettled she became.
Their issues hadn’t been resolved at all. Instead, everything was still a complete wreck, and her hear suffocated somehow.
She had always assumed Evan was someone she could bend to her will. Yet, everything thus far had
proven her wrong.
Roxanne and Anya soon arrived after hearing what had happened.
Their anger immediately soared when they heard the whole story.
“That b*stard!” Anya cursed. “He’s taking advantage of the situation!”
Roxanne’s anger burned even hotter.
Her plan had seemed flawless on paper. She thought she had accounted for every possible outcome. Yet, everything crumbled because Evan had somehow gotten a spine when they weren’t looking.
The more Hazel replayed their interactions over in her mind, the more her anger simmered. ‘How dare
threaten me with divorce! As if I care!’
“Who’s the one afraid of divorce here?” Hazel snapped. “It’s Evan. He’s the one who doesn’t want it, not
me.”
Her voice rose, trembling with fury. “If I divorce him, the worst I’ll face is some gossip. People would whisper behind my back and point fingers, but that’s it.”
She let out a cold laugh. “However, he’s dead if I sign those papers. And it won’t be a quick death. Just look at what happened to the Norwood family.”
Hazel nearly stormed back to the City Hall to complete the divorce process, simply to give Evan exactly
what he said he wanted.
Her anger refused to settle, churning inside her. Her irritation would surge anew each time she recalled his disrespectful words.
‘When did Evan start thinking like this? When did he start thinking that he could use the divorce to force me to submit? Does he really not realize he’s the one standing at the edge of the cliff?”
