Chapter 288 Out of Their League

That was it. “What?” Thaddeus’ family couldn’t handle it anymore. They finally crumpled to the ground. They no longer had the strength to remain standing. Fear had shocked them silly.

Although Jememiah, Ginevra, and even Estelle hailed from powerful families, the Leightons could still catch a glimpse of them on the rare occasion. But the Iron Dragon’s granddaughter and the Queen of Finance? Those women were beyond their influence and standing.

They were mere insects compared to those two. The heavens themselves were the obstacles they’d have to cross just to see them.

Evan said again, “Is this enough to cull your fantasy? I didn’t say yes to them, either. What made you think I’d say yes to Roxanne?” His voice thundered in their minds.

“No, I…”

Sadie wanted to say something, but Thaddeus roared, “You’ve embarrassed us enough already! Let’s go!”

And so, a humiliated and defeated Thaddeus grabbed his family and scurried away. The party didn’t stop because of them. In fact, it only got better.

The trio returned to their manor, disappointed and lost. The Leightons huddled around them and asked how things went. Evan wasn’t here, and the trio looked like they’d seen a ghost.

They asked, “Where’s Evan, sir?”

“He’s not coming. Roxanne’s not marrying. We were all being delusional,” muttered Thaddeus to himself as he shook his head.

Wendy and Sadie were the same. They could never forget the sight they’d seen at the Lounge. That told them how wide the chasm was between their family and Evan. They’d never bridge that gap.

The closest they ever were to him was the time Roxanne stole the life-saving drug and fed it to him. That thought strangled them even more.

Thaddeus fell to the ground and bellowed to the skies, “God has forsaken us!”

The Leightons were frightened.

“What’s wrong? Please, tell us. And what do you mean Roxanne’s not getting married?”

“There’s nothing more to it. She’s not getting married,” said Thaddeus, stone-faced. “They’re not suited for each other, that’s all.”

The answer only worried them more. Although they had no idea what had happened, they understood that the result had left them with Roxanne not getting married. It was a result that they couldn’t allow to happen. After all, her marriage to Evan was tied to their future glory.

Some looked at Wendy, trying to say something. They were suggesting that Wendy take Roxanne’s place.

They didn’t care who married Evan, so long as they could bind him to the Leightons.

But Thaddeus roared like a lion, “Not even Wendy’s good enough for him!”
