Chapter 289 Marriage Canceled

Hazel and Anya couldn’t help but wonder what Thaddeus meant. Just who was the man he was referring

to?

That was the only thing they’d heard. It didn’t help that Thaddeus hadn’t name-dropped anyone. Otherwise, their house of cards would come crashing down right then and there.

Still, Hazel and Anya frowned. Something was odd. The atmosphere around the Leighton estate was thick with tense silence. It was supposed to be Roxanne’s wedding day, but the Leightons looked like they were going to a funeral.

And Evan was nowhere to be found. They turned to Thaddeus.

“Old Mr. Leighton, what-”

Thaddeus shot them a withering glare, and it nearly made them shrivel into a ball. His gaze was dark, swimming with scorn and fury for them. He was looking at them as if they’d sinned against his family.

“I…” Hazel and Anya’s skin crawled, utterly perplexed. They wondered what had happened.

Thaddeus’ enmity for them both stemmed from the shock of his life and the heiresses, especially Hazel. He thought she must be out of her mind to use a once-in-a-lifetime prodigy as a replacement for a sickly

bastard.

If Hazel and Evan hadn’t gotten that divorce, they’d still be a couple on paper. It didn’t matter how strained their relationship really was, as the ladies of Silverton would’ve had no chance at him.

Roxanne would’ve eventually married Evan if they’d continued to go down that marriage carousel.

None of this would have happened if it weren’t for Hazel’s foolishness. The divorce changed everything. In Thaddeus’ eyes, Hazel was the root of the problem, and he would’ve cut her down if he could.

So, it certainly didn’t help that this fool of a woman had the gall to show her face here.

“I… Forget it.” In the end, Thaddeus swallowed his rage. Hazel had it worse, after all. She was already living a nightmare, but she didn’t even know it.

Evan made sure to tell the Leightons off, and they had barely anything to do with him. Hazel was the one who saw the divorce through. Regret would eat her alive once she found out she’d pushed away a man of Evan’s caliber.

She’d be the biggest joke of them all. Compared to her future, the Leightons had it easy. At least they’d gotten two high-quality life-saving drugs as recompense. Hazel had nothing. Even her parents were on Evan’s side.

That meant Hazel would lose everyone soon enough. The thought of Hazel and Anya’s future misery brought Thaddeus a modicum of joy.

Sure enough, the frustration he felt vanished. Humans. They’d derive joy from the pain of others. He felt

his anger tame to manageable levels now that he knew someone would have it worse than him.

But Thaddeus’ joy only deepened Hazel and Anya’s curiosity. They wondered, ‘What’s so funny? He’s acting weird.” They had a feeling he’d told them a lot in that little episode of silence.

“Did you bring Evan, Grandpa?” Roxanne’s voice came from her room.

Evan was running late, and she was running out of patience. Still, it was customary for the bride to remain in the room before she was married off. Roxanne felt cooped up, and the waiting was driving her nuts. She wanted to check things out but couldn’t.
