The heiresses thought Thaddeus was kidding about the cancellation. Still, Hazel and Anya figured that answered the Leightons’ tense silence and Evan’s no-show.
Roxanne burst out of her room in a huff. She held back her fury and demanded, “The marriage is canceled? Why? Did Evan do this?”
Thaddeus returned with the news of cancellation after meeting Evan. That could only be Evan’s doing. Roxanne was infuriated. The cancellation trampled all over her dignity, and it also meant their last-ditch plan had failed.
They failed to find the life-saving drug, gained no news about the energy drug, and now they couldn’t even control Evan and have him give his blood to Zeke. This was their worst-case scenario. Roxanne’s face was twisting up, her fists clenched. Her mind was nearly engulfed by the flames of fury.
But Thaddeus answered, “It wasn’t him. I made that decision myself.”
“What? You did that?” Roxanne wondered if she was hearing things, and the look on her face shifted.
Even Hazel and Anya stared at Thaddeus as if he’d just announced he was pregnant with twins.’ Thaddeus calling off the wedding? That can’t be true.’
But the shock wore off quickly. Roxanne stared at her grandfather in disbelief. “Why?”
“No reason. You’re beneath him.” Thaddeus shot her a scornful look, as if she were the source of the family’s humiliation. Then, he grabbed an agreement out of nowhere. It was the marriage agreement.
Thaddeus tore the agreement to pieces right in front of Roxanne. The torn papers fell like snowflakes, and the heiresses watched them fall to the ground in stunned silence.
It was shocking to see Thaddeus ripping the agreement up. Then, he scanned everyone with a warning glare, warning them angrily, “I’ll exile anyone who brings this marriage up again! Evan’s name is taboo from this moment onward! Never say his name in this household!”
He was sure his family would have no more ties with Evan from now on. Their choice was to hold on to the life-saving drugs and expand their influence with them.
However, the heiresses took the message in a different direction. Thaddeus’ fury fueled their imagination again.
Anya huddled closer and whispered, “I bet Evan crossed your grandpa. There’s no way he’d cancel the whole thing otherwise.”
Roxanne and Hazel’s hearts thundered. “True. We know how greedy he can be. He probably went too far and made Grandpa mad.”
The heiresses thought their analysis was the whole truth. That would explain everything.

That explanation only incensed Roxanne further. She thought, ‘The marriage was going to be set, and now it’s canceled? How’d you even do it, Evan? You want even more women? Am I not enough for you? Your greed’s going to kill you! You ruined our plans!’
Roxanne wanted to kill Evan.
