It was far too abnormal.
The entire Silverton elite circle knew that Evan couldn’t live without the three heiresses. It was also common knowledge that he was nothing more than Zeke’s substitute, In that case, why would Evan agree so readily?
‘Ms. Solberg is clearly serious this time. Once the divorce registration is signed, it will carry legal force…‘
Yet Evan had only paused for a token moment before agreeing. It completely shattered Rosa’s expectations. In her mind, Evan should have reacted as if facing a catastrophe emotional, agitated, demanding to know why. How could he be so calm, so… unbothered? Almost as if he genuinely wanted a divorce.
Meeting Rosa’s puzzled, conflicted, and faintly anxious gaze, Evan smiled lightly. “Why wouldn’t I agree? Isn’t this what Hazel wants? I’m just giving her what she asked for. She and her Zeke must’ve been having a great time lately, right? Once she divorces me, is she planning to marry Zeke next?”
Every word Evan spoke felt barbed. Even Rosa, just a bystander, felt uncomfortable listening. She pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose and couldn’t help saying, “Setting aside Ms. Solberg’s private life… have you ever considered that this might not be what she truly wants? She’s just trying to teach you a lesson.”
She was practically spelling Hazel’s intentions out loud. She was certain that with Hazel’s complicated feelings toward Evan, as long as he softened his attitude, truly reflected on his mistakes, and apologized sincerely, she would let it go. In fact, she might even treat him better afterward. It could’ve ended happily for everyone.
“Stop right there. Don’t,” Evan cut her off before she could finish. “Marriage isn’t a game. I’m sick of divorce being thrown around as a test or a punishment. She can teach lessons to whoever she wants. It has nothing to do with me.”
Rosa stiffened immediately, swallowing the rest of her words. ‘Stupid bastard–still putting up a tough front at a time like this! But I have a bad feeling this won’t end the way Ms. Solberg wants. Evan doesn’t look afraid of signing the divorce papers at all… but fine. In the end, he’s the one who’ll lose.‘
Before long, they arrived at the courthouse.
Located at the very heart of downtown, the area bustled with people. the courthouse had witnessed countless beginnings and endings–joy and sorrow alike. Some couples left hand in hand, smiling as they clutched the copies of their marriage certificate. Others walked out coldly with sullen faces, destined never to cross paths again.
Yet without exception, when people noticed Evan, they stopped and turned to stare.
“Isn’t that Evan Solberg? What’s he doing here? Is he getting divorced?”
“No way. Sure, he’s just a substitute for the three heiresses and not exactly favored, but he lives in luxury with money to burn. Who divorces wealth for no reason?”
“And I heard his life’s basically protected by the three heiresses. If he divorces her, he might not even survive…”
In Silverton, Evan counted as a minor celebrity. His appearance at the courthouse inevitably stirred gossip and speculation- everyone wondered why he was there. But Evan remained unaffected, walking straight inside on his own.
He touched the marriage certificate tucked against his chest. In his memory, both he and Hazel smiled so brightly then.
Just as Evan was about to hand over the marriage certificate and his ID to the staff, Rosa grabbed his arm, offering one last
warning. “Mr. Solberg, I don’t think you fully understand how serious this is. Once you sign this form, you may truly never see Ms. Solberg again.”
