Chapter 291 Disgust

Anya couldn’t believe Roxanne was crying. “What’s wrong with you?” All she did was console her, so her reaction really came out of nowhere. She had been angry just moments ago. Furious, even.

Anya scratched her head in confusion. “Come on, Roxanne. Don’t cry. Was it something I said? But I thought you never wanted to marry him. Why are you crying?”

She was panicking. She said nothing wrong, so why was Roxanne shedding tears?

Roxanne’s eyes were red-rimmed moments later, and tears wouldn’t stop coming. Her crying was silent.

“It’s not you, Anya.” Roxanne sobbed. “I don’t know why, but my chest hurts after the marriage’s canceled. It’s like I’ve lost something, and my heart’s crying.”

Then, she started talking gibberish, and it was mixed in with her sobbing. Anya was confused. She couldn’t hear her friend through all the sobbing.

“Shh, it’s okay.” Hazel pulled Roxanne into her arms, and slowly, she stopped crying. Anya couldn’t understand Roxanne’s feelings, but Hazel could. Her empathy came from the same experience.

She had the same feeling when the divorce was finalized a few days ago. It was the ending she wanted, but there was no sense of relief. Instead, her heart was squeezed and twisted.

She thought she’d lost her very soul right after the divorce. She didn’t even have the strength to walk.

Roxanne only had the marriage canceled. It was a lot better compared to Hazel’s situation.

The Leightons only spared them a cold stare.

Wendy even retched. “Oh, drop the act already. If you really cared about Evan, you’d have gotten his birthday right.”

Anya and Hazel were nonplussed.

“Evan’s birthday? It’s the 28th of April. It’s come and gone.”

Roxanne shivered in Hazel’s arms.

The Leightons wanted to yell at them. Wendy actually yelled at them, “Is that supposed to be a joke? His birthday’s today! He’s having a birthday bash at The Gilded Lounge!”

“What? It’s today?” Hazel and Anya stared at Wendy in dumbfounded shock.

“It can’t be today! You’ve got it all wrong! It’s April 28th!” they argued.

“We celebrated his birthday this year! I can still remember it clearly! We’ve given him presents! I got him Prada’s crocodile leather shoes! Hazel got him a Bulgari charity-edition necklace!” Anya said vehemently, utterly confident about her answer.

Hazel backed her up. “Yes, that’s what I got him. It took me a lot of effort to get it from the auction.”

The two sounded so confident. Thaddeus thought they were stupid. “See if Roxanne agrees with you, then.” He stormed into the mansion, kicking the heiresses out.

‘Unbelievable!’ he thought. ‘They’re imbeciles! Of course, Evan’s out of their league!’

Hazel and Anya were outside the estate, looking at Roxanne. “Um, what did he mean?”

Roxanne hemmed and hawed, but she eventually answered, “Evan’s birthday is today, Hazel. It’s true. I only found out three days ago. 28th of April? We’ve been celebrating Zeke’s birthday every year.”
