Chapter 58 Unafraid
Evan’s backers were also powerful enough to shake Silverton itself.
The Iron Dragon of South Dominion had his back, and his granddaughter was trying to win his affection. Seven special forces guarded him as well. The Overlord, no matter how ruthless, wouldn’t be foolish enough to move against Evan lightly.
Cynthia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. ‘Poor boy… He’s so scared he’s hallucinating. That’s the Overlord. He rules Silverton.’
The Silverton elites made it a point to give the Overlord a wide berth. He terrified them. The man gathered a mountain of resources and brought order to Silverton singlehandedly. No way Evan wasn’t scared of him.
Hazel overheard the conversation, and she sneered. She could guess her mother was talking Evan into getting back together with her. ‘Take the cue and play along already. You’re just being arrogant now. Absolutely unbelievable.
Evan’s casual, dismissive attitude only deepened Hazel’s contempt.
After promising to keep the estrangement secret, Evan left the house-only to run into Hazel at the gates. “What is it?” he barely looked at her.
Hazel had been acting weird since he came. She was always haughty around him, so serving him coffee and food was out of the question. Unless she had a request for him.
“I heard you and Mom talking. I know you’re mad, but lives are at stake here, so get the hint already, if not for our sake, then yours.”
A frown furrowed Evan’s brow. “What are you trying to say?”
“You’re terrified of the Overlord, aren’t you?” Hazel looked at Evan coldly. “You don’t want another repeat of what happened three years ago. If that happens again, I don’t think we can save you.”
She scoffed. “And that story about cooking for a friend? You were lying. That friend doesn’t exist. You’re just trying to make us think you’re too busy to care. You can lie to yourself, but I see through you. You’re trying to show off just to cover up your insecurity.”
Evan listened to the entire tirade in silence. When she finished, his expression shifted subtly. “Is that what you really think?”
“Yes! You’re terrified of the Overlord, and that friend of yours doesn’t exist. I can see through you, Evan!”
Convinced she had seen through him completely, Hazel missed the flash of amusement in Evan’s eyes. Evan laughed openly and without restraint.
‘Sorry, but you got it all wrong,’ he thought. He wasn’t scared of the Overlord, and Sylvie was real, too. ‘I can only get to the top by leaving you behind, but you’ll never know that.’
Hazel suddenly grabbed his hand. “Come with me!” She tried to pull him away, but he stood firmly like a boulder.
Evan used to be debilitated, someone the heiresses could shove aside with ease. But now, no matter how hard Hazel pulled, he stood unmoving.
He then asked, “Where are you taking me?”
“The hospital,” Hazel said urgently. “Zeke’s run out of backup blood. You’ll need to do another transfusi
