Chapter 59 Goodbye
Evan flung Hazel’s hand away and stormed off into the night. Hazel staggered a step, staring after him in shock.
He used to bend to her every whim, but now…
Now he was cold, uncontrollable, and not the man she knew. He had changed completely.
The shock lasted only a second. Then fury flooded in:
She shouted at Evan, “You haven’t paid back anything! You still owe us 150 million! You’ll never finish repaying us!”
Evan paused briefly, his back still to her. He then said quietly, “That bill’s already settled.” With that, he kept walking.
Hazel thought that couldn’t be possible. ‘He’s already paid off that debt? When? How?’ A realization struck her, and she hurried back to her parents.
“Dad, tell me the truth. Did Evan pay us the money we spent saving his ass?”
The question nearly collapsed the room.
Cynthia’s hand began to shake. The plates slipped from her grasp and shattered on the floor. Stefan choked on his water and coughed violently.
He was caught by surprise. ‘Why is she bringing this up
now?’
Hazel noticed her parents’ weird reactions, and she was even more curious.
Stefan breathed and asked nervously, “Who told you that, sweetheart?”
“Evan did!” said Hazel.
‘Good heavens!’ Stefan thought. He met his wife’s eyes and adamantly denied, “We didn’t get any money. Check the family’s account.”1
Cynthia agreed right away, “Yeah, we didn’t get anything! Evan gave us all the money he made. He didn’t even keep a dime for himself. He couldn’t have paid off the debt.”
They would never tell anyone the truth, or people would know Evan was already estranged from them. That would be disastrous. The Overlord might find out. That was why they insisted Hazel check the family accounts herself.
Evan didn’t wire the money straight into their family account. He used a brand-new one.
Hazel checked the family’s account. The balance remained the same, and her face fell.
Teeth clenched, she said bitterly, “You wouldn’t give your blood to Zeke, and you even lied to me about the repayment. Are you really that desperate to cut off all your ties with me?”
She stomped her foot in anger. Hazel’s parents, however, heaved a sigh of relief. ‘Good, the lie lives another day. Sorry, Evan. We know you’ve paid it all back, but now Hazel will think you lied to her,’ they thought.
