Chapter 94 A King in the Making
Evan hoped to find another rare treasure like the drakeblood root.
Hugo truly lived up to his reputation as an obsessive collector of antiques. His entire mansion was filled to the brim with them.
Hugo tried his best to curry Evan’s favor, saying, “Mr. Norwood, do take your time. Just take whatever catches your eye Or better yet, I’ll give you everything.”
Alas, Evan couldn’t find anything suitable for his cultivation even after making a full round through the mansion.
“Hm?”
A small jadeite bottle caught his attention, for the Ninefold Arcane Arts reacted sharply to it.
When Hugo saw Evan walking toward that bottle, his expression instantly grew tense. Evan tipped it over, and a peculiar shaped fruit rolled into his palm.
“A lotus crown fruit?” Evan blurted out.
Hugo tensed further when he saw that Evan recognized it. He rushed over anxiously, blurting, “Mr. Norwood, anything in this mansion is yours. Anything at all, but you can’t take that lotus crown fruit. It’s meant to be presented to Mr. Solomon!”
“For Mr. Solomon?” Evan’s eyes flickered. Then, his lips curled into an amused smile. “What a coincidence. I just so happened
to need this lotus crown fruit as well. So, I’ll be taking it.”
“You can’t!” Hugo looked about ready to pass out. “Mr. Norwood, that drakeblood gemstone fiasco has already put you on Mr. Solomon’s bad side. If you take the lotus crown fruit he’s supposed to receive…”
Hugo trailed off as he gulped, having trouble continuing his sentence. Terror flickered in his eyes.
How was Hugo supposed to explain himself to Mr. Solomon if Evan left the mansion with it? Anyone who offended that man was as good as dead.
Sadly, Evan simply watched him with a cold, mocking smile on his lips. “What of it? Will he kill me for it? Does he still think I’m the pushover I was three years ago?”
The words hit Hugo like a bolt of lightning. His lips parted as he stared, having trouble forming words.
Evan had a point. Cain was the ruler of Silverton’s underworld, but Evan… Well, Evan was no longer the man he used to be. Hugo had just witnessed him instantly crush the Monk Duo. After that display of power, Hugo wasn’t even sure Cain could defeat him.
A day would come when the two would clash. And when that day came… where was he supposed to stand
Hugo stared at the lotus crown fruit in Evan’s hand as his heart sank. He suddenly realized he had reached a crossroads in his life. Which side should he choose?
“Hugo, you’ve been the underground kingpin long enough. Have you ever thought about becoming Silverton’s king instead?” Evan asked quietly, but the words echoed like thunder.
Hugo felt his heart slam against his ribs. He had never even considered such a possibility. To him, the underworld was already the peak he could touch.
Anything beyond that light felt too blinding, too dangerous even. Still, he had to admit that it didn’t matter how accustomed he was to the darkness; everyone, including himself, still yearned to stand under the light.
“Mr. Norwood… would you be able to support me?” Hugo asked, his voice trembling.
Evan’s smile remained faint, calm. “I can try.”
Something long forgotten stirred in Hugo’s heart. He took a deep breath. “Alright, Mr. Norwood. If you want the lotus crown
