Coughing softly, Riley exhaled a shaky breath and scattered the doll’s splintered fragments into the wind. Though the Substitute Doll had saved her life, the phantom agony of being torn apart still pricked at her mind like a thousand needles.
SpicyBurger!”
Tartking rushed over and threw herself straight into Riley’s arms.
Pineapple Beer stood rooted to the spot, her expression tangled with raw emotion. Staring at Riley alive and unharmed, her chest heaved violently before she stepped forward in a rush.
Bang!
She slammed a fist hard against Riley’s shoulder. The blow carried enough force to make Riley stumble half a step back.
“Don’t you ever pull a stunt like this again without a word,” Pineapple Beer gritted out, word by word. She struggled to come up with a harsh enough rebuke, finally snapping, “Do it again, and I’ll have TartKing poison your food.”
Riley looked at her two closest friends and held her tongue for once.
“I’m sorry. Things happened so fast back there, I didn’t have time to explain…”
“It’s fine. As long as you’re okay,” PineappleBeer sighed helplessly.
“We’ve hit our limit.”
NorthWind’s despairing voice cut through their brief moment of relief.
Riley lifted her gaze and scanned the battlefield.
He was right–they were completely worn out.
They’d burned through every last trick they had, sacrificing a Substitute Doll to take down the second colossal monster. Yet one full–grown Hill Devourer still loomed unharmed across the battlefield, alongside another crippled giant monster with broken legs, spewing venom nonstop in a furious rage.
Worse still, freed from their suppression, hundreds upon hundreds of crawling monsters had smashed through the makeshift barrier set up by the Icefield Drifters Alliance.
They rolled forward like an endless black tide, pouring over the collapsed stone huts, closing in fast on the Bonfire Altar at the center.
Five yards.
Three yards…
Fewer than 50 survivors remained, most barely strong enough to lift their weapons. Some bore wounds deep enough to show bone; others had snapped their bowstrings entirely.

Familiar faces still fought on, but their efforts were nowhere near enough to stem the tide—the crawling monsters were overwhelming.
SouthWind and NorthWind stood back–to–back, sharing a bitter, helpless smile.
Whoosh-
A strange, eerie gust of wind suddenly swept across the camp, blowing in from the great rift.
Amid the dark snowfield, alternating streaks of crimson and icy blue light flared to life.
Then came a wolf’s howl.
“Arooo-
A long, resonant cry boomed across the edge of the battlefield.
The overwhelming pressure laced within the sound froze every rampaging crawling monster in place instantly.
A massive fireball streaked down like a meteor, slamming straight into the dense horde of monsters.
Boom!
Flames roared skyward, the surrounding temperature spiking sharply in an instant.
As the fire faded, everyone froze at the sight–this was no ordinary fireball.
It was a breathtakingly majestic, colossal wolf nearly twelve feet long!
Its coat blazed with a striking mix of crimson and snow–white fur. One eye burned bright red, the other glowed icy blue. Wispy phantoms of fire coiled around each of its four paws and its bushy tail, flickering in the wind in an awe–inspiring display of power.
These were no ordinary crimson flames–they blazed with a dual–colored fire, scarlet on the outer edge and deep midnight blue at their core.
Tap, tap, tap…
The regal fire wolf charged straight for Riley, swatting aside and crushing crawling monsters in its path without pause.
“What in the world is that?” SouthWind narrowed his eyes, having never laid eyes on such a creature
before.
“Looks like some kind of monster from the Monster Forest?”
“It feels familiar…” A member of WarWolf Guild rubbed his eyes, murmuring in confusion. “Doesn’t it kinda look like that Flame Wolf King our guild leader tried to steal an egg from in the Monster Forest before? Just… way smaller.”
“He never got his hands on it, right? Heard someone else snatched it away. I wasn’t even there back then.”
