Chapter 421 A Gift of Grapes

Right now, an incredibly rare, vibrant light of hope–something practically extinct in this apocalyptic wasteland—was radiating from the faces of these four natives.

Riley watched the scene unfold, a flicker of surprise crossing her eyes.

She had indeed told Joseph the blacksmith earlier that, aside from leaving enough space for necessary defensive depth, the natives were totally free to cultivate the newly thawed land.on the camp’s perimeter. It was a way to help them build a sense of belonging and achieve self–sufficiency.

“What’re you guys planting?” Riley asked as she strolled over.

Startled by her voice, the four natives practically jumped out of their skin. They immediately dropped their tools, spun around, and bowed respectfully.

“My–My Lady!” The natural awe and

everence they held for Riley bled through their voices. Tom and Lily, especially, were still new to the camp and didn’t know her temper yet. They were terrified they had crossed a line by commandeering the land.

“Relax, you don’t gotta be so

of black granules in Tom’s hands. “I don’t remember putting those seeds on the supply list I gave Joseph.”

Jeff, who was a bit older and naturally more outgoing, spoke up first. He scratched the back of his head and explained, “Uncle Tom and Aunt Lily are planning to grow grapes here. They said the soil is perfectly warmed up by the bonfire, which makes it ideal for the ancestral winemaking techniques they used back at the High Court Winery. We already ran it by Uncle Joseph, and he gave us the green light.”

Riley nodded. She had definitely granted that permission. Winemakers from a winery wanting to grow grapes to make wine–the logic was perfectly sound.

“Growing grapes is a great idea. I’m all for it,” Riley said, gesturing toward the rows of trellises to address the elephant in the room. “But where did you get the seeds?”

Besides, that green liquid Lily was watering the soil with was clearly pulsing with intense magic. That definitely wasn’t just tap water.

Hearing Riley’s question, the normally shy Lily gathered her courage. She stepped forward, pointing at the linen sacks piled nearby, and began to explain.

“My Lady, it happened like this. This morning, Tom and I were over there helping tend to the existing cabbage patch, and we figured we’d loosen up the soil on this side too,” Lily said, pointing behind her. “A little later, a few mages–like yourself–were wandering around. They got really curious about the veggies we were growing and started chatting with us.

“As we were talking, they asked if we were the ones brewing that incredibly delicious Iced Grape Wine they serve in the tavern. I told them yes, we’re the winemakers. They got super excited and asked why we had all this empty land but no grapevines. We had to tell them the truth–we didn’t have any grapes to plant.”

Lily’s eyes lit up as she continued. “Then, one of the mages stepped up–she was so generous and cool! She had short red hair and a massive greatsword on her back. When she heard we didn’t have seeds, she said,

“And then, like it was magic, she just pulled a massive sack of Grape Seeds right out of thin air and asked if we could use them. She even gave us several bags of this Magic Fertilizer that speeds up plant growth.”

Lily pointed gratefully at the sacks. “We were honestly too scared to accept it, but she just shoved the stuff into our hands and walked off. So, we quickly grabbed Jeff and Rod, skipped lunch, and started building the trellises to get these planted right away.”

Listening to Lily’s description–short red hair, carrying a greatsword, acting bold and generous….
