Chapter 422 The Ultimate Experiment
The plaza was fairly quiet. Only a handful of players who had just woken up were lingering in the towering tavern, munching on dry rations. To the left, the doors of the Basic Clinic were shut tight; Nobody was clearly busy with her own survivor duties.
To the right, however, the Library was lit up. Through the glass, Anna the bookkeeper could be seen intently reading something.
According to the building’s description, the Library only produced a single–digit number of books per day. It definitely wasn’t enough to overwhelm Anna right now, so she was likely just engrossed in whatever mysterious books the system had conjured out of thin air,
Riley pulled her gaze away, satisfied. Everything was getting back on track.
“Time to handle my own business.”
She spun around and headed straight back to her personal camp.
Riley marched directly toward the somewhat rugged–looking building in her yard–the Mechanical Workshop, or as she called it, the Tool Room.
She slid open the heavy iron door and flicked the switch on the wall. The cold, shadowless white lights instantly flooded the space.
Right now, the Tool Room looked like a bizarre mashup of a cluttered hardware store and a heavy–duty factory.
Ever since Riley exploited a system bug using her real–world toolbox to forcibly unlock the building, the industrial tech level in this room had completely shattered the aesthetic of the primitive snowfield outside.
Three automated assembly lines lay dormant in the center of the workshop, flanked by a chaotic but functional array of robotic arms that absolutely did not belong on the current tech tree.
But Riley wasn’t satisfied with this. She walked up to the workbench, but instead of sitting down, she flipped her wrist and pulled out a glowing card from her Inventory.
Special Building Targeted Upgrade Card.
Effect: Bypasses current guild level restrictions and prosperity requirements to forcefully upgrade a designated special building in the camp by one level.
For a normal player, upgrading a building didn’t yield mind–blowing results. TartKing had scored a similar, lower–tier card before and simply used it to upgrade her bakery. But this specific card explicitly worked on special buildings.
Riley locked her eyes on the Tool Room.
Its current industrial capacity was already terrifying.

Chapter 422 The Ultimate Experiment
But precisely because it was born from a system exploit, the system constantly treated it like it existed in a bizarre state of ambiguity.
When other survivors crafted gear, they needed blueprints, materials, and a system workbench of the corresponding level. But Riley? As long as she had the blueprints and materials, the Tool Room forcefully processed them, completely ignoring all workbench level restrictions.
If I use a high–tier system–bound item card to forcefully upgrade a bugged building‘ that exists outside the rules… Rile felt a surge of anticipation. Will it cause a data conflict and completely brick the room? Or will it shatter the system’s core logic and trigger an even crazier mutation? If this really is all just a game, would it crash the whole thing? Then again, it might just patch the bug.
After mulling it over for a second, she decided it was the perfect chance to test her theories. At the very least, it would provide more clues about the nature of this world.
Riley was never one to cower in fear of the unknown.
Besides, the monster horde had been a massive wake–up call.
The enemies they faced were only gonna get more terrifying. She needed to exploit every single avenue to get stronger if she wanted the power to protect what was hers.
“Use,” Riley said, her voice dead calm as she activated the card.
Target selected: Mechanical Workshop (Tool Room).
The moment the words left her mouth, the Special Building Targeted Upgrade Card shattered into countless specks of purplish–gold light. The motes of light swam through the air like living fish, intertwining before violently bursting apart into a dazzling golden wave. The light began seeping into the four walls, the assembly lines, and the ceiling of the Tool Room.
The translucent phantom of the card hovered in mid–air, slowly fading.
At first, everything seemed normal. Wherever the golden light touched, the rust on the iron walls peeled away, and exposed wires were neatly wrapped in layers of an unknown, high–tech insulation.
Looks like the system accepted it… Riley thought.
Then, everything went horribly wrong.
