“Let’s go! Time for the fireworks!” Tartking led the charge, and everyone else swarmed toward the doors to check out the explosives.
“Whoa, Felix, this firework barrel is massive!” Hana smiled, patting Felix on the shoulder as she looked at a firework tube roughly the size of an oil drum.
“You know it! When you lack quality, you make up for it with sheer volume. Materials were tight, so I had to rely on brute force.”
The others grabbed handfuls of sparklers and smaller firework tubes.
The crowd bundled up and poured out of the warm tavern in a massive wave.
The moment they pushed the doors open, a freezing gale well below -50°F blasted their faces, instantly sobering everyone up a bit.
But no one felt cold; the fire in their hearts was burning way too bright.
The massive bonfire in the center of the plaza was still roaring, radiating intense heat.
Felix and a few others arranged the homemade firecrackers in a semi–circle along the edge of the plaza.
According to tradition, these were supposed to be set off right at the stroke of midnight.
The rest of the guild broke into small groups, lighting the sparklers in their hands.
“Woohoo!” Neeko ran around, the sparkler in her hand showering sparks. “Riley, look! Flowers!”
TartKing lit three sparklers at once and handed one each to Riley/and PineappleBeer.
Riley grabbed the sparkler, watching the sparks spray from her hand. It honestly made her feel a bit surreal, like a dream.
Nearby, Neeko ran in circles with her sparkler, while C.P. and Ash happily chased her. The three of them were having an absolute
blast.
The only minor letdown was that, due to the lack of professional equipment, Felix’s homemade sparklers didn’t burn nearly as long as the ones back on Earth.
Quite a few people joked about Felix peddling bootleg goods, threatening to report him to Consumer Protection once the holidays
were over.
“Is everyone ready?
“The big one is going off!” Felix stood by the bonfire, holding a burning branch.
“Ready!”
“Light it up, Felix!”
A lot of people in the crowd instinctively covered their ears.
Looking incredibly smug, Felix stepped up to the massive firework barrel and used the branch to ignite the fuse at the base.

The fuse sparked instantly. Felix immediately spun around and sprinted back toward the crowd.
But… nothing happened to the barrel.
“What’s going on, Felix?”
“Is it a dud?”
“Felix, did you really just build a giant bootleg firework?”

“No way, my craftsmanship is flawless!” Felix retorted, looking incredibly confused. He raised the burning branch and started walking back toward the barrel.
Makes no sense. Did the wind blow out the fuse? Felix muttered in his head.
But just as he reached the seemingly dead firework barrel and was about to lean over to inspect it, a massive jet of fire erupted right in front of his face, scaring him so badly he scrambled backward on his hands and knees.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Amidst a series of muffled thuds, several pillars of fire tore through the blizzard and shot straight up into the sky before detonating violently.
Crimson like fire, icy blue like diamonds, and dazzling like spun gold.
The fireworks Felix had concocted using various magical powders bloomed in the night sky, radiating a fantastical glow that far surpassed Earth’s technology.
The dazzling light illuminated the falling snow over the guild base, creating an overwhelmingly breathtaking scene.
Brilliant fireworks rained down over the snowfield.
Felix ran back to the crowd. The explosions were so loud he couldn’t hear what anyone was shouting, but he could see everyone giving him huge thumbs–ups.
“Happy Holidays!”
“Happy New Year!”
In the plaza, everyone looked up at the sky and screamed at the top of their lungs.
Woven into those shouts was a release of the past, a tribute to the fallen, and a fierce, burning desire to survive the future.
Under the rain of fireworks, the flickering light reflected on the faces of Riley, TartKing, and PineappleBeer.
