Chapter 474 The Job Assignment
For the natives Riley had taken in, the last seven days felt like a fever dream.

At first, seeing the rotting Ghouls and bleached–white skeletons through the cracks in their wooden cabins at night had scared the life out of them.
But in their original world, magic and monsters weren’t purely myths.
While an average farmer might go a lifetime without seeing a high–tier beast, the occasional wild goblin or mutated wolf raid on a village wasn’t unheard of–but the sheer, horrific volume of monsters roaming the icefield was something they couldn’t have imagined in their worst nightmares.
After the initial terror, once they realized these horrors couldn’t breach the simple wooden wall and didn’t dare approach the altar’s “miracle fire,” their innate adaptability took over.
More importantly, there was food, shelter, and warm clothing.
After a week of decent meals and proper heating, the twenty–plus natives were looking like human beings again. Their frostbite was scabbing over, their gaunt frames were filling out, and their eyes held the flicker of hope rather than just the void of despair.
Once the bodies were ready, it was time to pull their weight.
That morning, in the clearing in front of the native communal hall.
Anna stood on the steps holding a notebook she’d gotten from TartKing, with Joseph and Jack standing by her side.
In front of her stood thirty–three natives–the original twenty–four, plus nine more rescued from the perimeter over the last few days–standing at attention.
“My Lady is merciful; she gave us a second life. But here, we provide for ourselves. Only the dead weight gets left behind,” Joseph cleared his throat and boomed. “Today, we assign duties based on your skills. When your name is called, step forward. If you have
questions, speak up.”
“Hank!”
A scrawny man with hands calloused like leather stepped up. “Here!”
“You said you were the best farmer in Lower River Village. From now on, you and your three children are joining the Gardening Squad. Your superior is Twiggy. You are responsible for watering, weeding, and composting in the Woodland Pocket Dimension. Twiggy doesn’t talk, but it understands you. If you’re stuck, ask me–but for the work, listen to Twiggy.”

He had been most worried about the kids, but gardening wasn’t back–breaking work, and he could stay with his family.
Hank beamed. “Praise the Lady!”
“Mary! Susan!”
Two women walked out, looking nervous.
“You said you worked as kitchen maids in a Baron’s estate?” Joseph checked his notes. “Report to the bakery. Start as assistants under Lily. Once you pass a culinary assessment, you can take over the kitchen duties.”

They nodded frantically.
“Pete!”
A wiry young man jumped out.
“You know livestock?” Joseph eyed him.
“Yes! And I can treat their ailments!” Pete puffed out his chest, proud.

“Good. Based on your skill, your post should be the stables, but there are no mounts right now.” Joseph paused, his tone turning grave. “You’re joining the Mining Squad for now. I’ve logged your skill; we’llrotate you when the situation changes.”

Pete thought he was going to be a slave in the mines. He swallowed hard, his legs feeling like jelly, but he gritted his teeth and agreed.
