Chapter 475 The Combustion Engine

That afternoon, in Riley’s workshop.

Joseph.

Riley stood at the control console, beckoning Joseph over.

Joseph stepped into the room, still looking intimidated by all the hightech equipment.

I’ve linked the assembly line to the blueprints for Basic Steel Breastplates, Steel Spears, Steel Swords, and Steel Shields,Riley gestured to the conveyor.

It’s simple. Just follow the prompts on the display, and it handles the rest.

Systemcrafted gear was fundamentally different from ordinary weapons.

Player gear had stat buffs, durability meters, and skill slots. But since natives lacked the system interface, they had to stick to standardissue gear.

Even without stats, a steel breastplate and spear were more than enough to handle a Ghoul’s claws.

Just run it when you have downtime; I’ve given you admin rights. This isn’t an emergency, but I want every guard and patrol member equipped with a full set.

Understood! I won’t let you down!

After dispatching Joseph, Riley turned to her highend workbench/

Cold steel could only get them so far. Real firepower for camp défense required equipment with special effects.

Riley pulled a stack of materials from her backpack.

She was going to craft Gust Light Crossbows.

They were the star of the WarWolf defense.

Their signature feature was the massive physical knockback effect on every bolt fired.

More importantly, while these crossbows couldn’t grant gear stats to natives, the knockback effect was a mechanical property of the weapon itself.

Three days later.

The first batchtwenty sets of steel breastplates, twenty spears, and thirty Gust Light Crossbowssat neatly on the weapon racks in the native quarters.

Armed, these natives weren’t just dead weight anymore. Under Jack’s training, their combat prowess was steadily climbing.

They even began organizing threeman night patrols, spears and crossbows in hand, keeping watch inside the wooden walls and taking a massive load off the Hope Guild survivors.

Life seemed to be accelerating toward a calm, prosperous horizon.

Both Riley and the rest of the guild settled into the grind: scouting and harvesting by day, basebuilding and partying by night.

The next morning, Riley woke up in her bed.

She rubbed her temples, glancing at the system time.

9:00 AM.

Riley paused. She’d slept way too soundly; she usually didn’t sleep in until nine, even if she turned in early.

She’d had a string of nightmares, but couldn’t remember a single one.

Usually, after the blizzard cleared, the sky would start turning grey around 6:00 AM, and even if it kept snowing, she could see a few hundred yards.

Most importantly, once daylight broke, those nocturnal spawnsthe Ghouls, the Skeleton Archers, all of themwould just melt away like snow under the sun, either burrowing back underground or vanishing into thin air.

But right now

Riley turned toward the window.

Through a crack in the curtains, not a single photon of light bled through.

What? Is it still dark? Did the blizzard come back?

Riley tossed the blanket aside, walked to the window barefoot/and yanked the heavy insulated curtains open.

Pure, suffocating blackness.

It wasn’t the dimness of an overcast day; it felt like her eyes had been wrapped in blindfolds.

No starlight, no reflection from grey cloudseven the light from the torches at the camp perimeter seemed to be crushed by some invisible force, the halos barely illuminating a yard or two.

She checked the time again. Her heart skipped a beat.

The storm had just passed; how was the system ramping up the difficulty this quickly?
