Surrounding the beast’s corpse, two squads of survivors were engaged in a brutal, blood–soaked firefight.
The larger squad had five people: four men and one woman. Their gear was highly uniform, and each bore a guild emblem on their chest resembling a black hawk spreading its wings.
Their team composition was textbook: a heavily armored Knight holding the frontline with a shield, two melee Assassins flanking the sides, and a Fire Mage wielding a staff in the backline next to a Ranger with a drawn bow.
The smaller squad only had three people. Two swordsmen were desperately holding the frontline against the siege, protecting a scrawny man in grey robes holding a staff–likely a buff–oriented Support or Mage.
“Hand over the loot crate and I’ll let you three walk! The dungeon just started; we don’t want a mutually assured destruction scenario either,” the Fire Mage in the backline arrogantly shouted, conjuring a massive fireball in his hands.
“In your dreams! You want it, come kill us for it! Don’t you know the rules of first come, first served? You’ve got a lot of nerve trying to rob the Raging Tide Guild–our reinforcements are already on the way!” one of the besieged swordsmen roared through gritted teeth.
“If you’re in such a rush to die, I’ll happily oblige!” The fireball at the tip of the Fire Mage’s staff swelled in size, and he hurled it viciously at the trio.
The lead swordsman, incensed by the taunt, glared back defiantly.
“Bring it on! At worst, I’ll trade my life for yours! Taking you down with me is a win in my book!”
Riley watched the entire exchange silently from behind her pillar.
Raging Tide Guild? Never heard of them. The crew wearing the Black Hawk emblem? Completely unfamiliar.
It was glaringly obvious that neither of these squads was from her server; they might even be from two separate, entirely different servers.
This was a classic case of thieves robbing thieves.
While Riley was certainly tempted by the loot crate, she kept a cool head. In a dungeon where friend and for were indistinguishable and intel was non–existent, diving into a chaotic free–for–all over a single box was incredibly stupid–especially considering these were high–stat survivors from other servers.
Gathering intel was priority one.
Weighing the pros and cons, Riley decided to slip back the way she came and bypass the mess entirely.
However, just as she was about to pull back into the shadows, the scrawny man protected in the center of the three–man squad suddenly flared with a bizarre, grey light in his eyes.
It was clearly some sort of ocular tracking skill. His gaze pierced straight through the smoke and chaos of

the battlefield, locking onto Riley’s hiding spot from fifty feet away with terrifying precision.
Warning bells shrieked in Riley’s head.
I’m spotted!

The next second, the scrawny man didn’t just look away. Acting as if he’d just grabbed a lifeline, he pointed directly at Riley and screamed at the top of his lungs.
“You’re finally here! Perfect timing! Flank their Mage, let’s crush them in a pincer!”
In the enclosed plaza, his shout echoed like a thunderclap.
The five–man squad, previously pressing the attack, looked horrified. Their offensive rhythm stuttered instantly. The backline Mage and Ranger snapped their heads around, their gazes zeroing in on Riley’s stone pillar.
Riley froze, cursing viciously in her head.
She instantly understood the b*stard’s play.
The scrawny guy had spotted her creeping in the shadows and deduced she wasn’t with the Black Hawk crew. Pushed to the brink of death, he pulled a dirty decoy trick, fabricating the illusion of heavy reinforcements to divide the five–man squad’s attention and force them to split their forces, buying his team a window to break out.
It was a crude, dirty trick, but in a high–tension life–or–death scenario, it was devastatingly effective.
Just as expected, the Fire Mage’s face paled slightly. He immediately barked at one of the Assassins next to him. “Shadow Hound, deal with the ambush! Figure out their numbers and hold the line! Don’t let their backup get close! The rest of you, focus fire! We burst these three down right now!”
“On it!”
The survivor called Shadow Hound let out a cold snort. Holding a pair of bronze maces in a reverse grip, he instantly broke away from the main brawl, blurring toward Riley’s pillar like a phantom.
