Audrey laughed. “It’s not like I’m never coming back. And anyway, if you miss me, you can just come visit me in Harrisburg.”
That made Sarah grin. “You’re right. Harrisburg really isn’t far from Cabinda.” Since she’d lived there for a few years, Sarah started listing off all the best places to eat and fun spots to check out.
Then she got a little sentimental. “You know, out of all of us, you’re the bravest. We all know Walter Wilson. He’s a real gentleman, especially with women. I’m sure he’d never treat you badly. But if he ever does anything to upset you, just let me and Camila know. We’ll come over and set him straight.”
“Deal!” Audrey said, laughing. It felt amazing to have her friends in her corner.
The afternoon party was full of laughter and good vibes.
The very next day, Audrey caught a flight to Harrisburg. Dennis had already sorted out her apartment. It was right in the center of the city, close to NextGen Technologies, the Smith Group, and the Wilson Group offices. Super convenient.
Audrey didn’t tell Walter she’d arrived. She wanted to surprise him, so she decided to drop by the Wilson Group herself the next morning. She was looking forward to seeing the look on his face.
But while it all sounded cute in her head, things got off to a bumpier start than she expected.
When she arrived at the Wilson Group building, the receptionist stopped her right away. “Do you have an appointment?”
Audrey froze for a second. She’d been so focused on surprising Walter that she’d totally forgotten about needing an appointment. She shook her head. “No, I don’t.”
The receptionist gave her a once-over. It wasn’t really her fault. Lately, there had been a parade of girls pretending to be rich socialites, all hoping to catch Mr. Wilson’s attention. Rumor had it that Mrs. Wilson was on the hunt for a daughter-in-law, so even more girls were showing up every day. Audrey’s classy outfit and confident vibe probably made her look like just another one of them.
Tired of dealing with it, the receptionist just said, “Sorry, miss. No appointment, no entry. Our CEO is really busy and doesn’t have time for this kind of thing.”
Anyone would have been annoyed at that attitude. Audrey just raised her eyebrow, noticing how quickly the woman’s tone had switched up, but she didn’t say anything.
She’d brought her assistant with her, a former secretary of Dennis’s who knew Audrey well. Hearing the receptionist’s rude comment, the assistant bristled. “Do you even know who Ms. Williams is? That’s no way to speak to her…”
Audrey reached out and gently stopped her. “It’s okay,” she said, smiling. “I’ll just call Walter. No need to make this awkward.”
