“Alright.”
Walter Wilson wasn’t about to go against his mom. While he was talking with her, Iris was busy making the rounds with her parents, wine glass in hand, greeting guests in the main hall. They all knew everyone was really here for the Carter family’s sake. The speeches on stage hadn’t covered everything, so now, off stage, Iris and her parents had to toast each guest personally, making sure to show their gratitude.
Leda and Palmer, though, had no interest in getting involved. They stayed away from the Carters, sticking close to their son and Audrey Williams, making it clear they weren’t planning to chat about Iris at all.
Standing next to Audrey, Leda’s mood seemed to lift. She linked arms with Audrey and said, “Audrey, your dress is absolutely stunning tonight. It suits you perfectly. And your makeup is so elegant. You look gorgeous.”
Audrey grinned, a playful spark in her eyes. “Thank you. It’s actually a custom piece from a designer friend of mine. Her work is always so unique. You have such great taste, Mrs. Wilson. I just knew you’d appreciate it.”
Leda laughed, obviously delighted by the compliment. “Oh, you’re just too sweet.”
Audrey smiled even wider. “I mean it, really. I’m not just flattering you.”
Then she leaned in closer and whispered to Leda, “The glasses you picked out for Walter? He looked so handsome in them, I could barely stand it.”
Hearing that, Leda suddenly remembered about the glasses. She turned to look for them but realized Walter wasn’t wearing them anymore.
She gave Walter a gentle nudge with her elbow. “Hey, I matched those glasses for you before we left the house. Why aren’t you wearing them?”
Before Walter could say anything, Audrey leaned over again and whispered with a hint of mischief, “I took them off him.”
Leda’s eyes widened, surprised that Audrey could get her son to listen to her so easily.
Audrey continued, her voice low and teasing, “You really raised a heartbreaker, Mrs. Wilson. With those glasses on tonight, he looked even more attractive than usual. The moment I saw him, I just wanted to keep him all to myself… I couldn’t let anyone else see.”
Leda looked at Audrey, who seemed just like a clever little fox, and burst out laughing. “So that’s how it is.”
Inside, she felt even more certain that Audrey really liked her son.
She glanced at Walter, who seemed totally clueless about what was going on.
Leda shook her head, half amused, half exasperated.
Palmer, standing nearby, heard the whole exchange and couldn’t help but smile. Both Iris and Audrey clearly had feelings for his son, but he and Leda had never had any bad impressions of Audrey Williams.
The reason was simple. Audrey was so open and honest about her feelings. She didn’t play games or hide her intentions.
