Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1306

After dinner that night, they lounged around for a bit before heading out together for a soak in the hot spring. Usually, things would get romantic and playful between them here in the steamy water. But tonight, Camila wasn’t in the mood for anything but peace. She pressed a quick kiss to his lips, then nestled against Dennis, her words coming out soft and a little worn out. “Dennis, can we just go back to bed?”

He didn’t hesitate. Of course, he’d go along with whatever she wanted. Wrapping his arms around her, Dennis quietly carried her back to their room. He knew how fragile her health was these days and he’d been extra careful not to push her. Once he helped her into her pajamas, they curled up under the covers, bodies close and hearts beating in sync.

Camila’s fingers threaded gently through his hair, her voice barely above a whisper against his ear. “Just sleep. I’m right here with you.”

He let out a relaxed little sound, feeling comforted. “Yeah, I know.”

For once, Dennis slept soundly. But as the night wore on, the peace was shattered. Somewhere in those dark, silent hours, the dream came for him.

“Dennis... it hurts...”

Her voice was thin and shaky, carrying across the room. He turned to her and his heart nearly stopped — Camila looked so much worse than before. Blood stained her lips, trickling down. The sight hit him like a punch.

“Camila...”

He tried to say something, wanted to comfort her, but the words caught in his throat. Her eyes met his, full of pain and growing distant, as if her spirit was slipping away piece by piece. She looked so fragile, so heartbreakingly delicate, like a flower ready to crumble in the wind.

Dennis tried to move closer, desperate to hold her, but it felt like some invisible barrier had trapped him on the other side. No matter how hard he fought, he couldn’t reach her. Panic swelled inside him. He struggled to wake up, but his body felt impossibly heavy.

Finally, he broke free, jolting awake. The familiar outlines of their bedroom came into focus. Cold sweat soaked his brow, and he was breathing hard, chest tight. As the fear faded a little, realization set in — it had only been a nightmare.

Dennis immediately reached out, needing to feel her there beside him. The jolt from his movement woke Camila.

She blinked her sleepy eyes, yawning as she sat up. “What’s wrong?”

Taking his hand in hers, she noticed instantly that his palm, usually so warm, had turned icy cold. Camila’s drowsiness disappeared, replaced with concern. “Dennis, did you have a bad dream?”

He didn’t answer right away, just pulled her into an intense hug, holding her close as if he was afraid he’d lose her if he let go.
