"I went to see her a few times during her rehearsals with Isabella this past month," Audrey continued. "Her sensitivity to music and her incredible memory make it easy for her to learn so many pieces."
Charlotte Kelly added, "Autism is a psychological condition, not an intellectual one. I suppose the Smiths really did just dislike the child, not that they were unaware of her potential. And because they never bothered to pay her any mind, they never realized how exceptional Lillian truly is."
Douglas Williams thought of the Smiths' past actions with disgust. "Lillian was just a baby then. You wouldn't treat a stray dog on the street with such indifference, let alone a child!"
Audrey nodded emphatically, her voice filled with indignation. "Exactly! If Camila hadn't been so relentless, searching everywhere for a doctor and finally finding Dennis, the Smiths probably would have just treated Lillian like an idiot for the rest of her life..."
The family's coordinated effort successfully stoked the embers of the elder Mr. Williams's anger. He snorted coldly. "Utterly shameful! Even the worst feuds shouldn't involve children. The Smiths are heartless, brainless fools, unable to tolerate even a small child. People like that truly have no class."
He figured it was fate that had saved a child like Lillian from suffering any longer in that family. Although the elder Mr. Williams had initially opposed Dennis's relationship with Camila because she had a child, he would never stoop so low as to attack a little girl. Even when he was displeased with Camila, he had never considered using Lillian as leverage to force them apart.
His previous attitude stemmed from a desire for his grandson to have a child of his own. But now that Dennis was unable to have biological children and wanted only this family, the patriarch's protective instincts kicked in.
"The Smiths are absolutely not getting that child back!" the elder Mr. Williams declared, his tone resolute.
The trio's relentless persuasion began to wear him down. Just as he was about to give in, Audrey delivered the final blow. "Grandpa, look! Over there, in the back. That's Jordan Smith! He's definitely here for Lillian. After seeing how brilliantly she performed tonight, he'll be even more determined to get her back. And above all else, you have to think about Dennis's happiness. Don't forget his... condition!"
That was the trump card. The elder Mr. Williams's heart skipped a beat. He turned to look and saw Jordan Smith, dressed impeccably in a suit, his gaze fixed on the small figure on stage. Jordan hadn't noticed them.
The elder Mr. Williams grumbled, "He looks presentable enough, and seems sharp, but he's acted like a complete fool. It would be a disgrace if Dennis lost to a man like that."
Audrey nodded. "Of course Dennis won't lose to him. But as long as you don't soften your stance, people will keep using it as a point of attack. That's not a big deal, but everyone out there uses it to bully Camila, saying all sorts of awful things about her. It's painful even for me to hear! Imagine how much worse it must be for Dennis!"
