“The meeting’s been pushed back a couple of hours. I’ll swing by Henry’s school.”
Just as Andre reached the parking lot, his phone rang. Predictably, it was his adorable troublemaker’s teacher. “Hey, I’m on my way. Did he really hit someone?”
Meanwhile, at Havenbrook University, Mia’s phone buzzed just as she was heading to class. Spotting the school’s number, she handed her books to Jamie. “Could you take these to the classroom for me?” she asked, ducking into the hallway to answer. “Hello, Ms. Xu? What?!”
On the way to Henry’s preschool, Mia called her advisor to ask for leave. “My son got into it with a classmate and the school called for a parent. I have to run over there.”
There was a stunned pause on the other end—probably the first time the advisor had heard a student-mom use that excuse. A college kid being summoned as a parent.
Halfway there, instead of heading straight to Henry’s school, Andre pulled up beside Mia. “You’ve got a lot of classes today. You don’t have to go, I can handle it.”
But Mia’s mind was already racing with worst-case scenarios. Buckling her seatbelt, she shook her head. “If I don’t go, I’ll be worried all through class. Let’s just go together, babe.”
When they arrived at the preschool, Henry’s classmate’s grandpa, Mr. Swift, had already stormed in, fuming.
He didn’t even bother to sit down, demanding at the top of his lungs, “Who bullied my grandson?”
Henry hopped up from his tiny chair and shot back, “Hmph! I didn’t bully anyone! He started crying by himself!”
The teachers looked ready to faint, terrified the situation would blow up between the families. Henry, true to form, looked completely unbothered.
