Andre glanced at the glowing screen of her phone. "You two get under the covers. I'll grab his lotion and his books."
Henry had been sneaking into his parents' bed more often lately. Andre grabbed the baby lotion and the foreign language workbook. Mia tutored him on a few pages during the day, and Andre handled the heavy lifting at night.
Late into the night, the little guy sat in his father's lap, mimicking his pronunciation. Mia lay on her side next to them, scrolling through her phone.
Every now and then, she had to answer her son's interruptions. "Mom, is Dad's pronunciation right, or is mine?" Henry tugged at her pajama sleeve, genuinely curious.
Mia didn't miss a beat. "You're both wrong. The way I read it is the right way."
Three people, three different pronunciations. Finally, they decided to call Cooper, who was just waking up and brewing coffee across the globe, to settle the debate. "Mia," Cooper sighed into the phone, "I don't know where you get the confidence to think a literal business tycoon's pronunciation is wrong."
"He's not a god," Mia shot back. "That doesn't mean everything he says is perfect."
"Oh, so if he's wrong, that automatically makes you the patron saint of linguistics?"
Mia got the message loud and clear—both she and her son were wrong, and her husband was right. "You could have just said your brother-in-law was right! You just had to pick a fight with me. Keep pushing it, and I'll fly over there just to beat you up."
"I didn't want to fight," Cooper scoffed. "Your blind confidence is just staggering. I'm genuinely curious what gives you the audacity."
"And what gives you the audacity to talk to me like that, Cooper Irvin?"
"Cooper, is the coffee ready?" a female voice suddenly echoed through the phone.
Mia jolted upright in bed. "Cooper? Hello? Hello?!"
Cooper had already hung up. He turned around to glare at the woman demanding coffee. "Damn it, Jennie. Can you at least knock before you barge in here?"
Jennie stood in the doorway, raising a hand to lightly tap the wood. "Like this? But you left the door unlocked. Weren't you waiting for me?"
Cooper glanced at the coffee machine, quickly pulling a shot of espresso.
