Now that they were married, Milka finally felt comfortable bringing up those old memories.
Roberto, who was helping prep the ingredients, chuckled. "Your mom and I actually knew the whole time. She noticed Mars acting weird. He completely ignored all other girls, but every single time he went out, he'd swing by next door to drag you along.
Whenever he bought gifts, your mom and I never got anything, but he'd sneak out in the middle of the night just to hand something over to you. A couple of times, he straight-up hopped the fence into your yard. Your mom and I were standing right by the window, watching the whole thing in plain sight." The two of them hadn't even dared to turn on the lights, terrified of spooking their son.
They had just whispered by the window, "Roberto, come look! Mars is jumping the fence to go see our future daughter-in-law again."
Milka was utterly speechless.
Leah laughed brightly. "Didn't you ever notice that I treated you way differently than everyone else back then?"
Milka put down the dough, casting her mind back to her teenage years. Now that she thought about it, Leah really had treated her exceptionally well—almost suspiciously well!
Leah chuckled. "See? Now you remember. You two silly kids thought you were hiding it from us. Mars completely forgot what line of work his parents were in. What an idiot."
"I guess experience really does win out," Milka conceded with a laugh.
Once the dinner was cooked and plated, Milka snapped a picture and sent it to her friend group chat.
Not long after, Annie shared her own photo. "I made these by hand. I'm completely out of practice, so they're all different sizes."
Annie stared at the steaming food she had just pulled from the stove. Having just snapped her photo, she was holding her phone and typing out replies.
In the living room, Conner was tossing his daughter into the air, making Lizzy giggle uncontrollably. "Sweetheart, you're almost a year old. Tell Dad, what kind of present do you want?"
Lizzy's bright, watery eyes locked onto her father. "Waaa... Dada."
