Conner picked up another bite, dipped it in sauce, and swallowed it whole. "It's a major holiday. She didn't go home to spend it with your parents?"

"No, she's still up on the mountain. She wouldn't even let my parents go up there to keep her company."

Originally, Annie had planned to take her husband and daughter back to her parents' house. But knowing Maja might show up, and knowing full well how much Conner and Maja despised each other, she decided it was better for their family of three to just celebrate at home.

Right before dinner, Annie had called her parents. "Mom, did you guys eat yet?"

"We're just about to. Where's Lizzy?"

"Conner is outside playing with her. Did Maja come home?"

That was when Annie found out her sister hadn't gone home for the holiday.

Leaving her parents alone to eat dinner on a holiday made Annie feel terribly guilty. But for her parents, it was actually a massive relief.

Even though Conner was their son-in-law, the older couple still harbored a deep-seated terror of him. They treated him with the utmost reverence, completely unable to relax in his presence.

So, staying home was a blessing in disguise. Her parents could finally enjoy a peaceful, stress-free holiday.

As they ate, Lizzy was still working on her food, so Conner pulled her onto his lap. He insisted on holding his little girl while he finished his meal.

Lizzy watched her dad polish off massive bites of food, looking thoroughly envious. Deciding to imitate him, she grabbed a huge handful.

She opened her mouth as wide as she could and aggressively shoved the entire piece of food inside.

What followed was the echoing sound of Lizzy's wails filling the living room, accompanied by her parents' sheer panic.

After lunch, Conner headed out to grab drinks with his men.

Annie strapped her daughter into her car seat and drove up the mountain. A warm container of food rested in the back seat, and Lizzy, securely strapped in, stared at it hungrily the entire drive.
